State of NC Internship - Brownfield's Vapor Intrusion Data Analyst (Hybrid)
Department: Environmental Quality
Division: Waste Management
Job Duties: The science surrounding contaminant vapor intrusion(VI)assessment and remediation is relatively new and is constantly changing as more research is conducted. As a result, VI assessments conducted today are more accurate and thorough than they have been historically. The objective of this project will be to evaluate recent and past VI data taken on brownfields properties and VI risk evaluation results for residential and non-residential brownfields property uses. The resultant data evaluation and analysis will fuel better, data-driven decisions for the development of Brownfields Program guidance on the assessment and mitigation of contaminant VI. This information will be used to guide program wide decisions such as when vapor mitigation systems are required, and the type and frequency of VI assessment required prior to construction on brownfield properties.
Major Task to be Performed: Data mining on existing VI data, conduct data analysis, and compile a data set of brownfield properties and their respective VI risk evaluation results, property re-use, and VI mitigation status.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: The final products would include: 1) a database of brownfields properties with the property reuse, VI risk evaluation (groundwater, soil, and indoor air) results and mitigation status; 2) a presentation of database results and data analyses, including comparison of risk evaluation results and the factors that influence risk evaluation results.
Academic Majors Desired: Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, Public Policy, Statistical Analysis, Economics, other sciences.
A successful intern should have past experience conducting research and the capability to complete work remotely and online. Strong communication skills and skills in Microsoft Excel or other database applications are desired. The ability to complete quantitative reports or documents based on numbers such as NC Brownfields fees, redevelopment investment, property tax values, jobs created, and other measurable public benefits is also preferred.
