Communications Specialist – Full Time, Permanent
Located in Canada (flexible)

This is a fantastic opportunity for a junior communications professional who wants to work in an innovative national charity enabling community-led transformation for nature and communities to thrive together. Specifically, we are looking for someone with a passion for social justice, equity, environmental conservation and stewardship, climate action, and Indigenous authority and cultural resurgence.

Are you a self-motivated, adaptive, and quick learner who is looking for fulfilling work in the non-profit sector with supportive colleagues and a flexible work culture? MakeWay is looking for a Communication Specialist to join our team. In this role you will manage content for our organization’s website, provide writing and copyediting support, coordinate social media activities and email campaigns, and other communications support as required. As part of a highly collaborative Communications team, you will work with teams across MakeWay to help activate storytelling about our partnerships and impact.

MakeWay builds partnerships and solutions to help nature and communities thrive together. We are made up of two legal charitable entities: MakeWay Charitable Society, a shared platform home to over 65 innovative community-led projects staffed by 150 change makers; and MakeWay Foundation where about 70 people are advancing place-based programs that support Indigenous-led solutions and conservation in the North, Pacific, Manitoba, and beyond via grant-making, funder collaboratives and other tools. Our people, projects, and partners are based across the country.

What You’ll Do:
  • Coordinate website management on Wordpress CMS, including copywriting, posting editorial content including blogs, news, reports etc., webpage editing, image sourcing and editing, working with web developer for special projects, and general content maintenance.
  • Coordinate events and webinars.
  • Manage MakeWay social media community; draft content for different channels and different audiences, engage as MakeWay on social media platforms, manage content calendar, tracking, engaging, monitoring, analytics, and social media advertisements; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Create email campaigns: Develop and execute email campaigns including event invites, fundraising appeals, and community e-news.
  • Write editorial content and copyedit for a wide range of communications channels (e.g.: blog, annual report, news releases, impact stories, website copy, email campaigns).
  • Coordinate and manage Google Analytics, Google AdWords.
  • Conduct media tracking and compile highlights to send to staff and board regularly.
  • Support with basic design and layout of marketing materials, social media assets, and photo editing.
  • Help ensure brand guidelines and graphics are observed and our visual identity is applied with partners and projects.
  • Coordinate the production of the annual report.
  • Support communications team with general administrative tasks and data coordination including mailing lists, Salesforce records and attributes, and campaign tracking.
  • Support a wide range of MakeWay colleagues and project teams across the country with communications and marketing tasks as needed.

Experience You Bring:
  • Two or more years’ of related work experience in Communications
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) an asset
  • Knowledge of Google AdWords, social media ads, and Google Analytics an asset
  • Experience with Salesforce CRM an asset
  • Experience with Wordpress website CMS an asset
  • Strong copywriting, editing, and oral communication skills
