Residential Energy Efficiency Engineering Intern (Junior or above)

Xcel Energy is seeking an intern to support Energy Efficiency Programs for residential and commercial customers. This position may be based in Denver, CO, or Minneapolis, MN; This intern will be required to be within a reasonable commuting distance from one of these locations throughout the duration of the internship.
Summary
Help Xcel Energy customers use energy more efficiently. Provide technical guidance to internal and external customers; evaluate potential projects and recommend solutions. Develop knowledge and expertise in specific technical areas and apply that expertise to maximize customer benefit from Xcel Energy conservation products. Provide outstanding customer service.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide technical assistance to the Xcel Energy Marketing and Sales organizations. Perform the day-to-day engineering in assigned technical areas. Construct analyses using technical-financial models
- Develop rapid but rigorous analytical models based upon good engineering practice and Energy Efficiency staff methods. Learn job responsibilities as well as rules / guidelines (both regulatory and internal) from engineers, and product management team members for assigned programs.
- Develop and maintain Xcel Energy's technical knowledge in specific assigned area for gas or electric conservation programs (HVAC, lighting, controls, boilers, furnaces). This position will be a resource in the assigned area.
- Leverage internal expertise to customer advantage by developing relationships with external networks of engineering and architectural firms, government agencies, industry associations and research firms. Acquire and develop knowledge in assigned areas by interacting and learning from these sources.
- Meet established turnaround time criteria for assigned projects to foster customer participation.
- Innovate new methods to improve customer service and team effectiveness.
Required
- Pursuit of a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mechanical or related Engineering degree from an ABET accredited curriculum
- Must be in Junior year or above as of date of application.
- Ability to take direction, learn and work remotely. When conditions allow, ability to commute to and work from designated work location (Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN) 20-30 hours per week.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team
- Strong skills in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Must be able to work throughout school year on part time basis, around school schedule.
Preferred
- Experience with energy conservation in one or more of the following: energy engineering consulting, HVAC, lighting, compressed air, energy efficient building construction, motors, controls, industrial processing, recommissioning, boilers, and furnaces
- Interest in energy conservation or environmental science
- Previous internship/working experience

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 - 28.40 per hour (depending on year in school)
