Radiolab Internship, Spring 2022

2.3

If you haven’t heard, we’re living in “unprecedented” times. And because of that, Radiolab is adding one more unprecedented thing to the list: We’re looking for a remote intern to join our team.
For the Spring of 2022, Radiolab is looking for a wildly curious, self-starting intern to join our team while we continue to work remotely. The internship will be 15 hours per week.
We know—there are some downsides of a remote internship (fewer office snacks, namely). But we also see a few silver linings—like the opportunity to hire an intern who might otherwise not be able to relocate to New York City. And because of that, we’re excited to welcome an ‘unprecedented intern’ to our team in these unprecedented times.
What you’ll be doing as An Unprecedented Intern:

  • Participating in many aspects of the show’s production - from finding stories to sitting in on virtual interviews, to cutting tape
  • Taking part in regularly scheduled virtual editorial meetings
  • Providing research assistance
  • Performing a range of administrative tasks involved in the daily running of the show
  • Building on basic audio production skills, specifically in ProTools
  • Pitching your own story ideas, and receiving feedback on your work
  • Chatting with different members of the team each week in one-on-one phone calls

What we’re looking for in An Unprecedented Intern:

  • Someone who is familiar with the show but who also wants to add a new perspective to the team
  • Someone with some journalism or radio production experience. (Due to the entirely virtual nature of this session’s internship, we will prioritize applicants who have some familiarity with audio production).
  • Someone who can work collaboratively but also independently. We’re looking for an intern who likes to jump in often and ask how they can help
  • Someone who is deeply curious about the world around them

Want to apply? Here’s how:
Submit a resume and a cover letter telling us a bit about yourself and why you want to be a Radiolab intern. Bonus points if we can tell you wrote it specifically for this internship (not the ten others you may be applying to).
In addition to your cover letter, please include an additional document answering the following questions:

  • What is your favorite moment from a Radiolab episode, and why? (Please choose a specific moment from one story or segment.)
  • Describe a moment from Radiolab that didn't work for you, and tell us why.
  • Imagine you’re invited to pitch a story idea at our next staff meeting. Give us a one-paragraph pitch (we want the elevator version—something short and sweet.) In addition to describing the idea itself, tell us who could tell the story or explain the idea. Who would you track down for an interview?
  • In a few sentences, tell us the best thing you’ve read, heard, or seen this week. We’re looking for the story you’ll bring up at dinner with your friends tonight, or the one you’d tell at a party this weekend. It can be an article that blew your mind, a video that cracked you up, or something unbelievable that happened to you or one of your friends.

Please note the last day to submit applications is November 19, 2021
Eligibility:
Any student (undergraduate or graduate) or person who has graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship period to which they are applying.
