Legal Intern – Hate crimes/Extremism – Spring 2022 (Remote)
Attacks on democracy by ultranationalist, white supremist groups continues to grow. The Extremism and Human Rights program is designed to curtail the threat of the white nationalist movement through public education, advocacy and storytelling. This unique, legal internship opportunity will allow 3Ls or recent law school graduates the opportunity to work on a host cutting-edge project relating to extremism and veterans, hate crimes, hate speech on social media platforms and human rights. Students will gather and analyze statistics on white nationalist organizations. Projects will include collecting the number and type of attacks over time, looking at trends, and possibly even modeling group capacity out into the future.
This internship will also allow the intern to gain direct experience working with impacted communities of color, including Black, Brown, AAPI, Muslim, LGBTQ-I, Immigrant communities and give them an opportunity to interface directly with leading experts in the hate crimes space, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, Human Rights Campaign, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, The Lawyer’s Committee on Civil Rights, and others within civil society. The intern will also have the opportunity to publish blog posts, white paper reports and attend government meetings with DOJ, DHS and DOD.
Interns will work remotely. A computer and stable internet connection are required for this position.
Duties
  • Legal research and writing of position papers analyzing case law.
  • Draft white papers on hate crimes impacting Asian, Black, Brown, LGBTQ-I, Muslim and Immigrant communities in recent years.
  • Watch and brief Extremism team on relevant Congressional hearings relating to hate crimes, domestic violent, extremism and national security.
  • Track, document and brief Extremism team on active litigation in the hate crimes and extremism space against white supremist militias.
  • Track, document and brief Extremism team on active statutes, include the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, TVTP, and other legislation.
  • Attend meetings and brief Extremism team on coalition updates.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Excellent writing and legal research skills.
  • Report writing experience.
  • Hill experience preferred.
  • Congressional advocacy in the area of hate crimes, extremism or counterterrorism.
  • Experience working with communities of color and diverse coalitions
Required Education: Law school 3L or recent law graduate.
Compensation: Unpaid
Start Date: January 24, 2022
Time Commitment: 10 hours per week minimum.
