Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation team seeks an undergraduate or graduate school intern to join Project: Afghan Legal Assistance (PALA) for the Spring 2022 semester. PALA, created in response to the legal representation needs of the Afghan refugee population, seeks to provide legal assistance to Afghans in the United States. The non-legal intern will provide general support to PALA, including with administrative and operational needs of the program, as well as assist with data entry and screenings of potential clients.
Interns will work remotely. A computer and stable internet connection are required for this position. All internships are unpaid and remote, though externship credit may be available through students’ universities.
DUTIES
  • Assist staff with conducting screenings and intake interviews with potential asylum, Special Immigrant Visa applicants, or other Afghan clients;
  • Participate in and take notes for various NGO and government liaison meetings with the Department of Homeland Security or other government agencies;
  • Assist with monitoring the PALA email inbox and sending out template replies for inquiries;
  • Input and update client data into case database;
  • Monitor news and complete country condition research for analysis and reporting;
  • Interpretation may be involved, if fluent in a relevant second language; and
  • Attend legal trainings, advocacy group meetings, and discussion panels
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines at once
  • Excellent computer and online research skills, including familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Dedicated interest and passion for immigration advocacy and protecting the rights of migrants
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations and survivors of trauma
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, clients, and community organizations
  • Motivated to work independently/remotely
  • Initiative and enthusiasm
  • Passion for protecting the rights of Afghans seeking representation in the United States, and;
  • Strong preference for fluence in Dari or Pashto.
REQUIRED EDUCATION: Interns must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school program.
COMPENSATION: Unpaid
START DATE: January 24, 2022
TIME COMMITMENT: 10-15 hours per week minimum.
