LEGAL INTERN SPECIAL PROJECTS – SPRING 2022 – (REMOTE)
Human Rights First’s Refugee Representation team seeks law student intern to join Project: Afghan Legal Assistance (PALA) for the Spring 2022 semester. PALA, created in response to the legal representation needs of the Afghan refugee population, seeks to provide legal assistance to Afghan in the United States. The legal intern will assist with legal consults, intake interviews, legal representation, and support the legal representation of Afghan seeking asylum, Special Immigrant Visas, and other forms of relief.
Interns will work remotely. A computer and stable internet connection are required for this position. All internships are unpaid, though externship credit may be available through students’ law schools. Interns must be currently enrolled in law school.

DUTIES
- Conduct screenings and intake interviews with potential asylum, Special Immigrant Visa applicants, or other Afghan clients;
- Write and edit detailed factual and legal reports with extensive country conditions documentation and legal analysis;
- Conduct issue-spotting to evaluate whether each individual meets the legal definition of a refugee (training is provided for those with no experience in asylum or refugee issues);
- Assist Human Rights First attorneys in drafting affidavits, briefs, immigration forms, and other legal documents;
- Assist staff with legal research, and preparation of training materials and;
- Participate in various NGO and government liaison meetings with the Department of Homeland Security or other government agencies.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines at once
- Dedicated interest and passion for immigration advocacy and protecting the rights of migrants
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and survivors of trauma
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, clients, and community organizations
- Motivated to work independently/remotely
- Initiative and enthusiasm
- Passion for protecting the rights of Afghans seeking representation in the United States, and;
- Strong preference for fluency in Dari or Pashto.
REQUIRED EDUCATION: Currently enrolled in law school.
COMPENSATION: Unpaid
START DATE: January 24, 2022
TIME COMMITMENT: 10-15 hours per week minimum.
