The Legislative & Policy Intern

Position Summary

The Legislative & Policy Intern will assist the FSMB’s Advocacy Team with issues related to the regulation of the practice of medicine and healthcare policies, including, but not limited to, licensure, telemedicine, pain management, ethics and professionalism, and emergency preparedness. The Legislative & Policy Intern will be expected to be an integral part of FSMB projects in these areas. Projects may include analyzing state and federal legislation, researching and drafting summaries on healthcare regulatory trends, and assisting in development of regulatory policies and guidelines. The Legislative & Policy Intern may also assist the FSMB’s Communications Team on various projects.

The position will be located in the Washington, DC office, with remote work possible based on COVID-19 precautions. The Legislative & Policy Intern position will be a paid part-time position for 10-12 weeks (12-15 hours per week) with potential extension.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legislative and regulatory research
  • Analyze and prepare summaries of state and federal legislation
  • Assist in the management of FSMB’s legislative tracking system
  • Attend Congressional hearings and briefings for staff
  • Assist in tasks associated with the preparation and execution of various workgroups and committees
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Interest in healthcare policy
  • Knowledge of the legislative process
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, key individuals and/or organizations/agencies on legislative-related issues
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of management, co-workers, and external parties
  • Ability to meet deadlines and make effective decisions
  • Ability to multi-task, work effectively under pressure, and be flexible
  • Ability to work with limited or remote supervision
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software

Educational Background:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program from an accredited university or college; a degree program in a related field preferred.
