Student Assistant - Transportation Planner (Oakland/Remote)

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant. The student will be working under close supervision of the Chief, Community Planning Branch, in a learning capacity, the student assistant/Transportation Planner Intern will gain transportation planning experience in a collegian environment with creative ideas for solving complex transportation problems. The student will be exposed to a variety of transportation planning issues and trends while participating in activities related to the Caltrans Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program and Planning Public Engagement activities.
Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all worked must be performed in the state of California.

Work Schedule
Flexible, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Final work schedule will be determined by supervisor.
- Due to COVID-19, student will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants generally work up to 20 hours per work week (Sunday-Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks; (Winter, Spring and Summer).
Student Assistants are not permitted to telecommute or work remotely.

Minimum Qualifications
- Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook applications.
- Must be dependable and punctual.
- Must have the ability to multi-task, adapt to changes in priorities, and complete tasks or assignments with short notice.
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- One visit to the District Office will be required and remaining work can be via tele-work.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Preferred Qualifications
It is helpful but not required that the incumbent is familiar with or has knowledge of transportation planning concepts including multi-modal, sustainable, pedestrian, bicycle transportation issues and trends.
Duties and Responsibilities
Working under close supervision and in a learning capacity, the student assistant will;
- Participate in the review and evaluation of sustainable transportation planning grant proposals, planning study scopes of work, schedules, and funding plans.
- Attend planning study meetings with Caltrans staff and local agency partners.
- Participate in reviewing and commenting on planning study deliverables and reports.
- Assist with project quarterly reporting and invoice review.
- Participate in the development of public engagement strategies for multimodal transportation planning studies.
- Research and document traditional and emerging public engagement techniques and best practices.
- Participate in the implementation, documentation, and evaluation of public engagement efforts.
- Assist with coordination of virtual events including scheduling events, preparing agendas, and taking meeting notes.
- Create or update documents, presentations, and messages using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office/remote environment.
