About the Internship:

Symetra is offering 4 opportunities with our Finance - Accounting area. This is a full-time, paid internship taking place in spring/summer 2022. The internship is 100% remote. The duration of the internship is 3 to 6 months, during which you will have the opportunity to learn from experienced members of our finance team, while focusing on different areas in finance. You will get hands on experience and work ready skills through working with several finance software applications and contributing to diverse tasks and projects. Potential Responsibilities:

Intern Position #1 – Focus on Accounting and Reporting Cycle

• Participate in month end close process with the Financial Reporting, Expense Operations and Investment Accounting teams, including the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations and review of certain schedules.
• Preparation and tie-out of quarterly deliverables with the Financial Reporting and External Reporting Teams
• Rollforward and preparation of upcoming year-end 2022 deliverables with the Financial Reporting and External Reporting Teams
• Data Automation projects with Division Accounting team

Intern Position #2 – Focus on Tax related topics and Investments

• Preparation of federal income tax returns
• Assist with processing and summarizing Form K-1 partnership tax returns
• Assist with investment accounting projects (tax, GAAP, and/or Statutory reporting bases)
• Assist with quarterly tax provisions

Intern Position #3 – Focus on Reporting Cycle and Tax related topics

• Participate in month end close process with the Financial Reporting team, including the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations and review of certain schedules.
• Preparation and tie-out of quarterly deliverables with the Financial Reporting and External Reporting Teams
• Rollforward and preparation of upcoming year-end 2022 deliverables with the Financial Reporting and External Reporting Teams
• Preparation of federal income tax returns with Tax Team
• Assist with processing and summarizing Form K-1 partnership tax returns with Tax Team
• Assist with quarterly tax provisions

Intern Position #4 – Focus on Internal Audit Services

• Provide support to internal audit engagement teams by assisting with the planning for and auditing of processes and controls in accounting, finance, information technology and operations to ensure accuracy, effectiveness and reliability
• Assist with the testing of internal controls over financial reporting (SOX)
• Assist the lead auditor with various tasks including planning, organization of documentation, meeting scheduling and other administrative tasks associated with audits
• Develop an understanding of company operations, including specific insurance and financial services industry practices

• Enrolled in an undergraduate program pursuing degree.
• Good organizational and communication skills.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong computer skills, especially Excel and Word.
• Ability to work collaboratively with individuals across cultures, languages and geography.
