ABC Owned Television Data Journalism Internship, Remote - Spring 2022

ABC Owned Television Stations develops and produces high-impact journalism that informs and serves people in our eight communities across the country.

The owned stations’ data journalism team is responsible for acquiring, analyzing and presenting data that helps add precision to our stations’ daily local news reports or reveals major problems in our communities in need of solutions. The intern would assist the data team in all areas, from helping research major local and national investigations to working start-to-finish on local news stories in partnership with our data journalists and reporters at our stations.

Responsibilities:


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Research potential data sources.
  • Acquire data from local governments and other sources.
  • Partner with data journalists to analyze data and disseminate findings to local news teams.
  • Stay up to date on current events and develop intense curiosity about data that might shed new light.
  • Assist in writing findings, news stories for the web and scripts for broadcast news stories.
  • Assist with creating data visualizations for the web, working with our data journalists.
  • Contribute to brainstorming sessions with the data journalism team and local news teams.
  • Contribute to social media efforts and other means of sharing our work with the audience.


Basic Qualifications:


What you bring to the role…
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet software such as Excel or Google Sheets.
  • A passion for finding and developing revealing news stories that can make a difference locally.
  • Strong organizational/multi-tasking/prioritization skills; proficient written and verbal communication skills; self-starter/able to take initiative in a remote work environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy while working in a deadline-sensitive environment.
  • Enthusiasm about working with and learning different skills from a diverse team based in cities coast to coast.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Journalism, computer-science or data science student with an interest in exploring the data journalism field.
  • If not already dabbling in data analysis or programming beyond spreadsheets, an interest in learning a coding language.


Additional Information:

Internship Eligibility:
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Professional Internship
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must not have completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.
  • Must possess unrestricted work authorization
  • All candidates must be able to have a consistent, reliable work schedule throughout the session

Work Environment
  • This is a remote internship. The internship requires a working, reliable internet connection as well as a quiet, dedicated work space.
  • All candidates must be available from January 2022 through May/June 2022
  • All candidates must be available to work 20 hours per week
