POSITION SUMMARY:

Harnett County is seeking a part-time Communications Intern to perform a variety of digital communications and marketing functions to support the Public Information Office. This position may include the following responsibilities: preparing and coordinating content for social media; editing, writing, and publishing County newsletters; providing support for community outreach; and preparing and editing content on the County webpage. Work includes frequent written communication, creation of promotional material, and use of social media and online communication tools. Work is performed under the general direction of the Community Relations Coordinator. This position is part-time for up to 15 hours a week, with the ability for work to be performed remotely.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and executes digital communications campaigns, both internally and to the general public, regarding County services, programs, and events.
  • Maintains contact lists for relevant news media, community partners and citizens for the purpose of sharing information regarding County services and programs.
  • Prepares, edits, and designs content for County webpage and provides support to departments for webpage updates.
  • Edits, writes, and publishes monthly citizens and employee newsletters, collecting information, writing, editing and producing documents, and laying out and distributing for use.
  • Prepares and coordinates content for the official County social media accounts.
  • Assists with video production to create short video and graphics interchange format (.gif) files for use in social media.
  • Prepares and publishes weekly Harnett in the News bulletin.
  • Designs and develops digital content for information screens in County offices and public buildings.
  • Provides support focusing on community outreach, audience targeting, and engagement.
  • Provides event and special project support of promotional items, communications and related resources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program in Business, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or other related degree program; Coursework in graphic design or video production is preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job will be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms
  • Creative, flexible, self-directed, problem solver with an attention to detail and strong communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize projects efficiently with tight deadlines
  • Experience with using social media platforms in a professional setting, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and other graphic design software programs
  • Knowledge of email marketing software programs, such as Mailchimp
  • Computer proficiency of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint)
  • Basic knowledge of SEO best practices and terminology (content marketing, link building, etc.)
  • Ability to plan, prepare, design and edit communications materials
  • Ability to gather data, analyze findings and apply logic and reason to communication strategies
  • Knowledge of emerging industry trends, solutions, and best practices
  • Ability to utilize communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction


SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Working Conditions/Environment:
This position typically requires fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. It is sedentary work most of the time, with occasional walking and standing. Work is routinely performed in an indoor environment and can be performed remotely.

Successful completion of a drug screening and criminal background check will be required as a condition of employment.
