The City of Elk Grove’s Recycling & Waste Division is seeking a top-notch student to work in the Business Recycling & Waste Program. Under the direction and leadership of the Recycling & Waste Manager and Recycling Coordinator I, the student will be gaining first-hand exposure of working in a vibrant business and family friendly community. This opportunity will not only encourage personal development, but also works with, for, and in the community, in business capacities to provide education, resources, and inspiration in this ever-changing environment. Conditions of Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check, educational verification (i.e., degree, license, or official transcript) and physical exam and drug urinalysis test. Work Schedule
Flexible, Monday through Friday from 8:00AM – 5:00PM.
Final schedule will be determined by supervisor.
Telework opportunities are available to accommodate the student’s class schedule.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants generally work up to 20 hours per work week (Sunday-Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks; (Winter, Spring and Summer).

Student Assistants are not permitted to telecommute or work remotely.

Project Description
The Recycling & Waste Division’s primary responsibility is to provide Elk Grove residents and businesses with cost-effective, environmentally sound, and efficient services covering the full range of solid waste management through collection, recycling and education. Majors/Fields of Study
Biological Science, Business Administration, Communication Studies, Ecological Management and Restoration, Environmental Science, Liberal Studies, Natural Sciences, Public Policy and Administration

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have the ability to work well with others in a group environment or on their own; must be comfortable in talking and interacting with customers and/or staff; ability to practice sound judgment; enthusiastic and eager to learn.

Areas of focused are as follows: recycling, recycling education, California policies related to recycling (i.e. mandatory commercial recycling (Assembly Bill 341), mandatory organics recycling (Senate Bill 1383) and Recycling Infrastructures (Assembly Bill 827)).

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at an accredited college or university.

Students must be enrolled in at least six semester units or nine quarter units (undergraduate students); four semester units or six quarter units (graduate students).

Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a office environment desired.

Duties and Responsibilities
The student will provide support to the Recycling & Waste Division, working with the Recycling Coordinator I and the Recycling & Waste Manager in the following areas:
  • Develop recycling public outreach materials.
  • Assist with community events and workshops for the public (occasional weekends).
  • Research commercial solid waste and recycling topics and other local jurisdiction’s programs and outreach materials.
  • Record, analyze, and track commercial solid waste hauler data (solid waste tonnages, revenue, customer recycling information, etc.).
  • Inspect sites, record, analyze, and track construction & demolition debris recycling data.
  • Actively participate in meetings involving members of the solid waste industry and management staff.
  • Educate students and create school recycling programs (including organics) within the Elk Grove Unified School District.
  • Visit, inform, and inspect businesses regarding State regulations on Assembly Bill 341 (Mandatory Commercial Recycling), Senate Bill 1383, (Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling), and Assembly Bill 827 (Recycling Infrastructures).
  • Investigate future organic recycling needs for Elk Grove commercial businesses.
  • Develop and manage new programs pertaining to business recycling.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.
