State of NC Internship - Brownfields Public Outreach Coordinator Intern (Hybrid)

Department: Environmental QualityDivision: Waste ManagementJob Duties: Assessing and improving the NC Brownfields Program’s (the Program) municipal outreach and community engagement efforts, including to counties, cities, towns, economic development associations, councils of government, and tribal groups in NC. Building on survey assessment data as well as updating fact sheets and newsletters initiated by the summer 2021 Intern candidate. Through assessing past engagement, the Program seeks to improve outreach and assistance efforts to community stakeholders to realize the economic benefits of the Program. Major Task to be Performed: Compile survey results from 2021 survey sent to municipal contacts within the state and determine public outreach needs for municipalities; continue to compile municipal contacts for public outreach events; update public information guidance and literature for distribution. Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: The final products would be: a complete current outreach contact list to establish communication with interested parties including community stakeholders across NC that should be informed of relevant Brownfields updates,2) Updated guidance and literature documents for public perusal; and 3) A report of 2021 survey results detailing municipal perspective of the DEQ Brownfields Program with suggestions for improvement of the DEQ Brownfields Public Relations operations. Academic Majors Desired: Public Policy, Economics, Finance, Accounting, Communications, Parks and Recreation, Marketing, Public Relations, Community Development, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, other Sciences.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
A successful intern should have past experience conducting research and the capability to complete work remotely and online. Strong communication skills and skills in Microsoft Excel or other database applications are desired. The ability to complete quantitative reports or documents based on numbers such as NC Brownfields fees, redevelopment investment, property tax values, jobs created and other measurable public benefits is also preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state. Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2022.Community college students must have completed their first year completed before beginning the internship.Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
