What is the Invitern Program?
The Invitern Program offers opportunities for students, recent grads, or those who are early in their career to develop industry skills through Invitae's internship roles.
With each opportunity, we aim to create an experience for our interns (Inviterns!) that is enhanced by mentorship, networking opportunities, and impactful work. Throughout the duration of this program, we hope to offer a sense of community with our Inviterns and build lasting relationships. Our hope is that Inviterns become future Invitaens!
The 2022 Summer Invitern Program is a paid internship and will start June 6th, 2022 and commence August 12, 2022.

Genetic Counseling Assistant Intern - Clinical Consultation Services
Invitae is inviting applications from undergraduate students with an interest in human genetics and genomics to join our clinical team for a 3 month supervised remote learning experience as an intern supporting our Clinical Consultation Services team. They will work alongside our team of Genetic Counseling Assistants and Genetic Counselors as they provide excellent customer service experience to health providers with clinical questions, including discussing general clinical issues brought out by specific patients,, providing clinically useful information, and making recommendations for further care or referrals. The intern will also provide customer service to patients with general questions about the test process or results. This position requires a willingness to learn, and a dedication to patient health. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with an experienced team of California-licensed laboratory directors, board-certified medical geneticists and genetic counselors, genomics scientists, bioinformaticians, and other professionals who aim to bring comprehensive diagnostic and preventive genetic testing to the world.
Responsibilities
- Assist clients with clinical email inquiries using a client relationship management platform (Salesforce/SFDC)
- Review orders for clinical appropriateness and perform email outreach as necessary
- Participate in or take leadership of a development project
Requirements
- Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in genetics or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and task management skills
- Experience in a CLIA-certified diagnostic laboratory and familiarity with next-generation sequencing is preferred

Opportunities:
- Training with various members of genetic counseling (GC) and genetic counseling assistant (GCA) team on role-specific functions
- Weekly check-ins with GCA buddy
- Monthly check-ins with GC supervisor
- Attend weekly Genetic Counseling Services case conference
- Attend monthly Clinical Genomics case conference
- Observe primary and Tier 2 (specialty-specific) phone shifts
- Observe 2-3 post-test counseling sessions with our Genetic Counseling Services team
- Meet with genetic counselors from various teams at Invitae to gain exposure to the different roles genetic counselors can fulfill in the industry. These teams may include Clinical Science Liaisons, Medical Affairs, Marketing, Genetic Counseling Services, Variant Interpretation and Clinical Genomics.
- Participate in Genetic Counseling at Invitae employee resource group discussions
