The Carilion Clinic Innovation Licensing and Commercialization Internship will be 20 hours per week through the duration of November 2021 to May 2022. The intern will support one or more experienced Carilion Clinic staff members in performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of commercialization and licensing. Intern may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the Virginia Tech and Carilion community. Assist in the assessment, marketing, and licensing of new innovations developed at Carilion Clinic. Meet with inventors to gather information to perform market research, create marketing material, develop business models, and assist with intellectual property strategy. Coordinate with the Innovation Advancement team to develop business plans for emerging technologies.

Primary Responsibilities include the following:

  • Perform market research
  • Develop marketing materials to promote Carilion Innovations to potential industry partners
  • Manage and input data into Carilion Clinic Innovation’s internal software system
  • Coordinate with intellectual property attorneys to assist with patent filings and prosecution
  • Help develop standard operating procedures and template agreements
  • Focus on priority projects, as determined by the Carilion Clinic Innovation Team
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education: Preferably Business student, 4th year undergraduate, or graduate student. Additional biology, biomechanical engineering, or other life/health science background highly preferred, but not required.

Experience: Experience performing market research and developing business plans is preferred but not required. Experience working in a healthcare system preferred but not required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Meets basic requirements for visiting student at Carilion Clinic. This position can be remote, although a regionally located candidate is preferred.
