Job Description
The Health Advocacy Intern will focus on providing strategic support to AAFP’s Center for State Policy through research and analysis on key policy issues of importance to family medicine with a focus on state-level policy.
REQUIREMENTS:
The Health Advocacy Internship offers students the opportunity to build and strengthen professional skills particularly in research, analysis, writing, organization and interpersonal communications. Interns closely monitor state legislative proposals that address priority focus areas, including, primary care spending, scope of practice, prior authorization reform, Medicaid-to-Medicare parity, abortion access, preceptor tax credits, Medicaid waivers, vaccination exemptions, and direct primary care. In addition to legislative tracking is identifying the trends and ensuring State Chapters are equipped with the advocacy materials needed to address the bills.
Other responsibilities include assisting with issue backgrounders and other resources as appropriate, writing Advocacy Insider stories, and supporting the Center for State Policy Manager. Additional projects may arise throughout the internship duration.
The intern will learn about the legislative and regulatory implications of a broad range of state issues affecting family physicians. The role is extremely beneficial to those seeking to acquire practical work experience in the above mentioned area. Candidates that are working toward a graduate or postgraduate degree, such as a JD, MPP, MPA, or MPH with a policy focus, are preferred. Candidates should also have:
- Excellent written and communication skills, including competence in grammar, style, editing, and revising.
- Familiarity with the state legislative process
- Research and analysis experience
- Strong interest in health policy
