What Your Job Will Be Like


We are seeking an Undergraduate Intern with knowledge of Materials who is currently in a Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Related Major to join our dynamic team! The primary job function of the student intern is to support a cross-disciplinary team tasked with the development and implementation of a materials information management solution called GRANTA. The student intern will assist with data management, data analysis, and providing support to a cross-section of scientists and engineers with a range of material data information needs. This will also include giving presentations and training. The student is required to work on site for 10-15 hours per week during regular business hours in Albuquerque, NM, during the academic year and full time during the summer.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Interact directly with team members and customers who utilize GRANTA for materials data applications.
  • Assist with or actively develop data management, data importing and exporting, data analysis, and providing support to a cross-section of scientists and engineers with a range of material data information needs. This will include developing automatic data handling.
  • Give presentations and training about GRANTA and its data.

Qualifications We Require


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire

  • Undergraduate student (Sophomore or Junior) in Mechanical, Metallurgical, Chemical, Civil, or related Engineering or STEM Field.
  • Must have completed basic science and programming courses
  • Experience with programming using Python, MatLab, or other
  • Experience with Excel for managing data
  • Enrolled or have taken basic science (chemistry and physics) and Introductory Materials Science courses
  • Knowledge of Databases: SQL, Access, or others
  • Able to work in a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
  • Good communication skills both written and oral
  • Must be able to work on site in Albuquerque, NM, during regular business hours
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

About Our Team


The Coatings and Additive Manufacturing Department provides fundamental scientific and engineering expertise in the areas of thin films, vacuum system/component fabrication, laser machining and surface modification, precision engineering, metal additive manufacturing, and oversight of the materials property information (GRANTA MI) for the Laboratories. Over 25 elements as well as numerous compounds and alloys can be deposited by atomic layer deposition, sputter deposition and electron beam evaporation. Thin film properties can also be characterized using a wide variety of techniques. Precision engineering includes the design and fabrication of miniature and meso-scale devices, electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser machining, laser etching, as well as technical consulting. In Metal Additive Manufacturing, we utilize laser powder bed, Wire Arc, and directed energy deposition (LENS) technologies for both fundamental research and rapid prototyping. In addition, we develop applications, curate, and maintain the GRANTA materials information system. Our staff supports a variety of programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.
