Scientific Illustrator - Internship
The Cell Press Scientific Illustrator intern works on illustrative print and online content appearing in the front section of Cell . This role supports the flagship journal but can also serve other Cell Press journals in the life and physical sciences. This intern is responsible for following established workflows and managing journal deadlines and schedules. They will learn the Cell Press art department style and how to effectively manage assets for the team.
The intern will have substantive, assignment-based training on the job with regular mentorship from the intern’s manager. There will be opportunities to network with others in the career field. Additionally, interns will receive resume, portfolio, and website feedback from the art team. The intern will also receive guidance in other important practical skills, such as communication skills (with authors, editors, and peers), organizational/workflow strategies, and time management.
This internship is primarily intended to foster students and early career professionals from underrepresented minority groups, including people of color and from economically and historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Please note: Cell Press is not directly involved in the business activities of our parent company and, as such, the intern’s role will not touch on any fossil fuel industry products or services.
Time commitment: 8 weeks, 20 hours per week. June and July are preferred but start and end dates are flexible. Our office is located in Cambridge, MA, but remote candidates are encouraged to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conceptualize and create illustrations from authors’ rough sketches or electronic files.
Create ideas for scientific figures where the author of an article has not provided suggestions.
Potential production of other special content, including covers, posters, infographics and other materials.
Liaise with journal editors, authors, and production staff.
SKILLS:
Excellent drawing, typography, layout, and design abilities
Strong visualization skills to transform complex information into 2D images
Ability to handle a multitude of tasks and adhere to fixed workflows
The ability to work to deadlines
Detail oriented, quality driven, thorough, accurate
The ability to manage projects, digital assets, and the archiving of work
The ability to adapt illustration style and to ensure brand consistency
Strong organizational skills with correspondingly strong follow-up ability
Strong communication skills, verbal & written
Effective interpersonal skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficiency in digital illustration software Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
A portfolio of illustration work
A resume demonstrating any relevant prior experience.
A cover letter that covers career highlights and goals, and that touches upon interest in art and science and how the two overlap.
