Block Communications, Inc., (BCI) is a 118-year-old privately held diversified media holding company headquartered in Toledo, Ohio with business operations in publishing, cable, broadcast, and Telecom. With such diverse and large operations, it’s no surprise that the risk management department manages 73 insurance policies along with multiple self-insured programs. The risk management intern will gain invaluable experience working within the department and alongside the Director and employees of BCI subsidiaries. By the end of the internship, the risk management intern will have practical experience managing claims, ability to identify, analyze, and quantify risk, and understand the key importance of control and transfer of risk.

Job Summary

  • The Risk Management Intern’s primary focus will be to provide support to the Director of Risk Management regarding various projects throughout an 8-12-week internship.
  • The Risk Management Intern will report to the Director of Risk Management.
  • There are no direct reports to the Risk Management Intern

Key Responsibilities/Projects:

  • Gather, validate, organize, and analyze insurance underwriting data, insurance policies and premiums, and claim activity.
  • Update insurance reporting documents and policies and procedures managed by risk management.
  • Verify loss control measures by compiling and preparing reports for all BCI Subsidiaries and report on consolidated results.
  • Assist with preparing other risk management related materials.
  • Compile and review all contracts for all BCI Subsidiaries certificate holders.
  • Professionally interfacing with internal and external executives & staff members.
  • Other projects as assigned or needed.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent – required
  • May 2022 graduate or current student in pursuit of risk management degree or business studies major
    • Copy of transcript required (GPA of 2.7 or higher)
  • Moderate to advance experience with Microsoft Office (Word & Excel)

  • Software applications: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel);
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English in clear, concise sentence structure with accurate spelling and grammar;
  • Evidence of good organizational skills;
  • Careful attention to detail;
  • Ability to take direction and work independently within prescribed guidelines;
  • Ability to meet scheduled and unscheduled deadlines;

Physical Demands:

Walking, standing, sitting, lifting (up to 20 lbs.), hearing, talking, vision (close, adjust focus), and use of hands and fingers (grasp, hold, pick-up, rotate, keyboarding, etc.).


Working Conditions:

  • The risk management intern is a part-time non-exempt position, working 24-28 hour per week.
  • The risk management intern works in an automated business office environment with business office equipment including telephones, personal computers, copy machines, and FAX equipment.
  • The Company is a drug-free workplace. All employees are required to adhere to the Company’s drug-free workplace programs and policies. Pre-employment testing is mandatory along with random testing throughout continued employment.
  • The duties assigned, the hours worked, and the status of this position is subject to change as the needs of the company changes.
