Position Summary
The Conservation Documentation Archive Intern will provide support for the digital preservation of legacy Conservation Services Department (CSD) treatment documentation in the Conservation Documentation Archive (CDA). This documentation consists of paper records, photographs, and color slides that have been digitized and, along with born digital files, will be transferred to the Duke Digital Repository using library guidelines for deposit.
Responsibilities
- Organize and manage digital conservation documentation using pre-determined criteria.
- Locate and assign bibliographic identifiers to items in the collection.
- With guidance from metadata librarians, verify and clean up existing metadata, and create enhanced metadata for records following established guidelines.
- Assist with adapting documentation forms and procedures moving forward to allow for streamlined future repository ingests. Perform research into systems, forms, and databases as necessary.
- Create a LibGuide landing page for the Conservation Documentation Archive collection.
- Promote the project through writing contributions, such as blog posts.
- Attend a workshop or professional conference relevant to the project (virtual or in person).
- Participate in CSD department meetings, Technical Services division forums, and other DUL and university events, as appropriate.
- Performs other duties related to the grant project as assigned.

Education:
Required: Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in, or a recent graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.
Preferred: Current enrollment in an accredited graduate archival studies, public history, or information and library science program; or enrollment in a related graduate program combined with archival experience or training.
Experience:
Required: None
Preferred: Strong analytical, organizational, and writing skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; interest in digital archives, digital preservation, and/or metadata; capacity to take initiative and thrive in a rapidly changing environment; accurate and detail-oriented; ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team.
Prior experience in a library or archives, and/or completion of at least one course in archival theory and practice; experience creating metadata. Experience with ArchivesSpace or other archival collections management software. Knowledge of metadata standards such as Dublin Core. Experience with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Experience with designing databases or forms.

Hiring Rate
$17.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.
Hours
This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 15 hours per week from January 2022 – April 2022. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 8:30-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule.
