What Your Job Will Be Like


We are seeking a motivated software engineering student intern to join our team and perform entry to mid-level work in conjunction with Sandia staff such as designing, implementing, testing, and deploying innovative software frameworks and data processing architectures for embedded air, hypersonic and space systems. Our team’s work encompasses a wide variety of topics within computer science and software development, including:

  • Embedded systems
  • Real-time data processing
  • Full stack software development
  • Object-oriented software frameworks and architecture development
  • Networked and distributed architectures
  • Testing and validation frameworks
  • Visualization

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support research and development for Sandia’s customers and sponsors.
  • Create new understanding and conduct technical work by using the scientific method’s hypothesis, test, and evaluation techniques; critical review; or similar engineering research and development methods.
  • Support the design, development, execution, and evaluation of systems through basic and applied research.

Qualifications We Require


You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire

  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical principles and processes.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated use a variety of research tools.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of software development tools such as GIT, MATLAB, unit/module test framework.
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values.

Ideally, we would like for your background to include some of the following:

  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development methodologies, practices, and tools.
  • Experience supporting software for Linux or real-time operating systems such as VxWorks
  • Experience with formal software testing and verification strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative software development environment (team development processes and tools, shared code)
  • Knowledge and experience with scripting languages such as bash and python, C++.
  • Understanding of radar fundamentals or other sensor technologies
  • Currently have an active DOE security clearance or DOD equivalent

Department 5348, ISR Real-Time Processing, develops and delivers highly advanced digital hardware and software solutions to meet the demands of embedded processing for advanced radar (SAR/GMTI) and other advanced RF system development activities. Software development capabilities include: object-oriented analysis and design, operating system development, configuration and setup, quality attribute driven design, model-driven development, component-based development in support of a software product line, automated testing, low-level driver software for COTS and custom hardware, real-time embedded software, concurrent software for multi-core processors and GPUs, and GUI software.

Security Clearance


Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
