The Editorial, Design, and Production (EDP) department is seeking a creative, collaborative, and self-driven Junior Designer to assist with production and design efforts. Reporting to the Director of EDP and working closely with the Art Director and Designer, the Junior Designer is ideally suited for an individual with a strong typographic sense, excellent conceptual design skills, and an avid interest in book publishing. The ability to learn on the job and to work with others toward creative solutions is essential to success in this position.

The Junior Designer is primarily responsible for overseeing standards and guidelines for art appearing in the books we publish; performing requested art checks; correcting, adjusting, sizing, and cropping art files; designing interior inserts; adjusting existing book cover designs; and creating original book cover designs.

Core Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with design staff, maintain, revise, and educate fellow staff about art guidelines.
  • Evaluate the quality of art files for resolution, size, format, readiness for print, including evaluations of sample art prior to the contract stage. Provide timely feedback to acquisitions on what is required for replacement or corrected art.
  • At transmittal perform necessary art correction to halftones such as contrast adjustment.
  • At composition stage as needed crop and size art for standard interior design projects and design inserts.
  • Perform alterations or corrections to backlist jacket and cover mechanicals as needed for changes in printer at the reprint or new-in-paperback stage.
  • Work collaboratively with Production Editors in resolving problems with or adjusting art files and preparing art for composition.
  • Create original book cover designs. Consider priorities of marketing, acquisitions, and authors as conveyed at cover design meetings. Work closely with the Art Director and Designer to refine designs and incorporate feedback.
  • Stay current with new design trends, technologies, and software updates.
  • Participate in developing design and production procedures and initiatives including standard exterior designs and art evaluation procedures.

While this position is based out of Ithaca, New York, the successful applicant may work on-site, remotely at a location of their choice within the United States or a combination of the two. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines requires New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working outside New York State.

This is a two-year term position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates degree with 2 to 4 years work experience or a combination of equivalent education and work experience may be substituted.
  • Ability to assess and edit art files for meeting print publishing requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite software on a Mac platform.
  • Design proficiency using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Strong knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, FileMaker Pro, Bar Code Pro.
  • Excellent design ability, including strong type design, as demonstrated in portfolio.
  • Ability to communicate clearly at all levels, both in-house and with vendors.
  • Must have effective organizational skills, the ability to manage numerous projects at once, and be extremely detail-oriented to maintain high quality and standards.
  • The ability to meet deadlines is essential.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team as well as independently.
  • Must be a creative problem solver, flexible in incorporating the ideas of others into layout or design while at the same time maintaining design integrity.
  • Must have an ongoing curiosity about trends in book design and in graphic design generally.
  • Preference is given to those with a demonstrated knowledge of book production, design, and/or printing technologies, techniques, and practices.
  • No visa sponsorship is available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree from a four-year college or university (BFA in Design or a related field strongly preferred), one year of design experience, and an interest in book publishing.
