What is The Motley Fool?

The Motley Fool is a purpose-driven financial services firm with nearly 30 years of expertise and is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. Our goal is to make the world smarter, happier, and richer by providing outstanding business and investing advice, at scale. We’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our investing services, like Stock Advisor and Motley Fool Wealth Management, our portfolio management service.

What is The Motley Fool Foundation?

The Motley Fool Foundation strives to be a catalyst for meaningful, positive and sustainable change in the U.S., to start. The Motley Fool Foundation is a new public charity, created in January 2020, to leverage our access and relationships in the global investing community to mobilize a movement to unlock financial freedom for all. Foolanthropy has been core to the Fool since 1997, when we launched The Motley Fool Charity Fund, the Internet's first ever group-giving campaign! Since then, The Fool has raised millions of dollars for charity, coordinated thousands of employee volunteer hours, and pioneered Fool School, teaching personal finance and investing basics to the next generation of Fools.

In the next three years, the Foundation is looking to respond to the ramifications of Covid-19, launch pilot programs, and develop innovative, uniquely Foolish solutions to promote economic mobility and financial freedom for all. The Foundation’s goal is to work with The Motley Fool and other corporate leaders, the country's best-performing nonprofits, and government agencies to help bring replicable and Foolish ideas into practice, and then to scale. We are open to testing new models or investing in programs with a track record of success, and may work with a variety of investment vehicles, including grants, loans, or other impact investments.

What would you do in this role?

As our Operations Intern, you will help our team develop the strategy and execute on tactics for the Foundation’s public launch this spring. You will help our Operations Manager support our fundraising, marketing, and program teams, and help make sure all of our internal tools and processes contribute to the success of the Foundation’s initiatives. We’re looking for a strong communicator with exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills to facilitate effective collaboration among the team, the creativity to improvise solutions, and the ability to balance input from multiple stakeholders. After all, if you’re going to be a Fool, we promise to teach you how to juggle!

This is a paid ($21/hr), part-time (20 hrs/wk) internship from January - May, 2022, that will be fully remote, although our office is just outside Washington, DC, in Alexandria, VA.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Support our marketing and communication team, including assisting with PR/media outreach campaigns and keeping our website and social media up-to-date with relevant messaging, event information, and donation opportunities
  • Research the activities of potential partners - organizations already doing great work in our areas of interest. Keep our team in the know by presenting your findings about their mission, programs, and how they communicate with and engage their supporters
  • Assist with project management to implement our programming and partnership strategies - developing timelines, scheduling meetings, tracking milestones, and doing data entry
  • Help maintain and expand our database of donors and volunteers, and use the data within to execute successful fundraising and engagement campaigns
  • Provide support for our Board of Trustees, including managing communication and planning and executing Board meetings and retreats

What do you need to apply?

  • Curiosity, resourcefulness, and the ability to teach yourself new tools and skills. If you can Google your way to greatness, you’re on the right track. Power users of Salesforce, Smarsheet, GSuite, Slack, Zoom, Tableau, Canva, MS Office, and other well-known organizational or creative tools will jump to the front of the line.
  • Experience. Must have some hands-on experience (internship, volunteer work, or professional) in marketing, programming, or operations at a nonprofit or have worked in an agency environment serving either.
  • Creativity and exceptional communications skills. Say it, Write it. Show it. Please submit a creative or writing sample of no more than 500 words about what financial freedom means to you.
  • A sense of humor and joy in your work. As a team, we take our responsibilities seriously, not ourselves. You should be heart-driven, positive, collaborative, fun, and kind – and want to be part of a team that feels the same.

It’s even better if you…

  • Love, and excel at, building processes from the ground up. Attention to detail, strategic thinking, and strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Feel comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment where not all of the questions have been answered. You should bring a fine-tuned sense of when to take initiative and work independently, and when to ask for help.
  • Have a can-do attitude, the ability to improvise and implement solutions, and stellar follow-up and follow-through skills. You’ll be working on a small team making a big difference in the world.
  • Are excited about helping us build tools and programs to make the world smarter, happier, and richer. Show us your passionate commitment to equity and economic justice!

Please submit a short writing sample (500 words or less) about what financial freedom means to you, along with your resume and cover letter detailing how your passions and prior experiences make you a great fit!

The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We are a motley group of overachievers that have built a culture of trust founded on Foolishness, fun, and a commitment to making the world smarter, happier and richer. However you identify or whatever winding road has led you to us, please don't hesitate to apply if the description above leaves you thinking, "Hey! I could do that!"
