The purpose of this internship is to execute geospatial data management updates, field validation, and assignment of wetland attribution and functional classifications to standardize, merge, and update the wetland inventory for areas in Alaska (primarily the Anchorage commuting area) in a manner that is acceptable and compatible with the National Wetland Inventory (NWI), the federal standard for wetland mapping.
Project Goals:
- Conduct approximately 30 days of field work for validation for NWI coding
- Update signature database/documentation with field photos and screen shots for each code
- Complete NWI geometry and attribution
- Complete data management requirements
Project Objectives:
- Perform geospatial validation, analysis of spatial and attribute accuracy and conflict resolution, and other standard quality controls processes in accordance with the current mapping protocols and target mapping unit (TMU) adopted by the USFWS NWI.
- Perform field verification of problematic wetland types, including but not limited to spruce-dominated forested wetlands (PFO4), alpine swales, riverine wetlands, and other areas determined in the previous exercise to the ambiguous or otherwise problematic to verify.
- Perform initial quality control Review to finalize the wetland mapping updates to submit data to the NWI master geodatabase.
While much of this position will take place indoors and can be done remotely, there will be a field season component in the summer. This field work will take in the Anchorage area. Passing of Bear Safety and Shotgun Certification is a mandatory condition of employment.
Compensation amounts:
- $680 - weekly living allowance ($17 per hour equivalent at 40 hours per week)
- There is NO housing or travel allowance available for this position
- All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes
