STEM Education Internship
Location: remote
We are looking for a personable, charismatic, and energetic young adult to emcee a four-session virtual event series for high school & college students. Ideal candidate will be bubbly, personable, and comfortable working with both youth and adults.
Our virtual events are approximately two hours per session and include guest speakers and hands-on career activities. An example of the type of video sessions we host can be found
The Moderator and Emcee engages with the audience, keeps the energy up, and ensures a seamless transition between agenda items to keep the event moving at a steady pace within the time constraints. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical knowledge of virtual platforms [Zoom] and have a vibrant and approachable personality for hosting.
Speakers for the virtual series are early-career scientists, who tend to be a bit on the shy side. Emcee will help guide the guest speakers through a provided series of questions, engaging student participants to ask questions and play games (all tech provided).
Moderator and Emcee “MC” responsibilities include:
- Pre-event: liaise with planning team to confirm technical setup and complete “tech test.” Emcee must have a fixed, quiet location that includes laptop with internet connection, webcam, and built-in microphone or external mic appropriate for videoconferencing platform.
- Arrive at digital conference 15 minutes early to greet audience, make small talk and engage in ice breakers while people gather
- Introduce speakers & follow provided agenda outline – generally talking with one or several young scientists about their career path
- Sharing relevant session protocols, administrative Q&A sessions, and chat inquiries
- Manage time so event does not run over.
- Event wrap up and closing remarks
Required skills and experience:
- Excellent English communication skills, native speaker preferred
- 1-2 years acting/hosting/emceeing events is a plus
- Quick thinking, ability to ad-lib, improvise and entertain audience
- Experience working with youth
- Comfortable with navigating the virtual meeting platform
- Confident and self-motivated
- Maryland Childcare background check required
