Summer 2022 Internships: DevOps Web Engineer

4.2

Want to spend your summer interning at a company that is consistently rated as one of the best places to work in the country? Is this a rhetorical question??

The Motley Fool is a multimedia financial services company that provides financial solutions for investors through various stock, investing, and personal finance services. We've been on the block for about 28 years and have honed a reputation for producing industry-leading work in a nationally recognized workplace. Our mission is to make the world smarter, happier, and richer; and the backbone supporting this global mission is our top-notch tech team.

The Motley Fool is seeking a DevOps Web Engineer Intern. Do you enjoy building things? Do you enjoy solving problems? Have you used those passions to build and maintain a secure, reliable, scalable, performant, and cost-conscious technical solution (or want to try your hand at doing so)? Come join us in helping the world invest their savings in a smarter, better, more effortless way!

This is a paid full-time (40 hrs/wk) internship from June - July, 2022, that will be fully remote, although we have office locations in Denver, CO and Alexandria, VA.

What you will be doing:

As a DevOps Web Engineer Intern you will provide the platform, tools, and environment for the tech team to develop and deliver solutions for our money management clients. You will be a builder, an improver, and a fixer. You allow the developers to think more about code and less about where the code is and how it gets there.

What you will really be doing:

  • Use Amazon Web Services (AWS) tools and services to build and maintain the infrastructure for the Motley Fool’s money management suite of web sites.
  • Perform general system engineering tasks such as troubleshooting, backups and recoveries, performance monitoring and tuning, patching, and user administration.
  • Automate current manual engineering tasks.
  • Create and maintain documentation.

What you will need to succeed:

  • Please note that this list includes a broad range of skills and technology. For this position we do not expect full mastery for each item. Experience with some, a basic understanding of others, and a desire and aptitude to learn the rest is sufficient.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Familiarity with the technologies involved in a web stack (Linux, Apache/nginx, MySQL/Postgres, Python/PHP/JavaScript).
  • Experience with the Linux/Mac command line.
  • Experience with a scripting language (e.g. shell, Python, JavaScript or Chai Latte).
  • Familiarity with containers.
  • Familiarity with deployments and continuous integration.
  • Familiarity with basic web security.
  • Familiarity with basic networking concepts.

Key candidate qualities:

  • Attention to details, a “measure twice, cut once” mentality.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • A passion and ability to continue to develop technical skills.
