Speech-Language Therapy Graduate Student Intern
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attendance
- Graduate student clinicians are to be available during MSA work hours:
- 8:15-3:15 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
- 8:15-4:00 Thursday
- 8:15-2:45 Friday
- Graduate student is to attend all sessions, scheduled meetings, and enrichment meetings respective to their assigned caseload
- Graduate student clinician is allowed 2 sick days. In the event graduate student clinician is under the weather and in need of missing a day or a session, supervisor is to be emailed before 8:30am that day with notice and respective lesson plans for the supervisor to hold the day’s session/sessions
- The graduate student is advised to follow all Covid-19 safety protocols and must adhere to all safety requirements, including, but not limited to, honestly completing the questionnaire on the Sine Pro app prior to entering the school building each day
Daily Schedule
- Sessions run on the half hour beginning at 9:00 and ending at 2:00
- Speech seminar is held every Wednesday from 12:00-1:00. Every other week, all members of the MSA Speech Team attend seminar (both schools). On alternate weeks, each speech team (upper school and lower school) have their own team seminar.
Graduate student clinicians are to attend all seminars. Bring your lunch!
- Caseload consists of up to 40 sessions (8 per day)
- Lunch is 12:00-12:30 daily (welcome to bring lunch—refrigerator and microwave are available—or leave the building for a lunch break, as long as back and prepared for 12:30 session and/or work commitment).
- Prep period daily with the exception of Wednesday. This time can be used to write notes, prep sessions, or meet with supervisor
- Afternoons that are not utilized for enrichment meetings can be used for additional supervision and/or prep period
o Please notify your supervisor by 12:30 of said day if you would like to use this afternoon period for additional supervision
Supervision
- Graduate student clinicians must meet every morning with their supervisor at 8:30- 9:00. This time will be used to “check in,” and discuss daily sessions. Graduate student clinician is to come prepared to ask questions and discuss concerns or topics of interest
- Graduate student clinicians have a 30-minute prep period daily with the exception of Wednesday. This time can be used for additional supervision
o Please notify your supervisor and indicate if you would like to utilize your prep for additional supervision time
Lesson Plans for Therapy Sessions
- Lesson plans are to be created in a shared document with the clinician. Supervisor will provide you with lesson plan template
- Lesson plans are to be individualized for each student
- Lesson plans need to include the following:
o Goal addressed
o Rationale
o Activity
o Procedure
o Materials
o Reinforcement
- Lesson plans are due TWO DAYS PRIOR to scheduled session. This allows time for the supervisor to review lesson plans and to provide constructive feedback, if necessary, and edits, to be made by graduate student clinician
o Friday by 4:00: Tuesday Session Plans are due
o Monday by 4:00: Wednesday Sessions Plans are due
o Tuesday by 4:00: Thursday Session Plans are due
o Wednesday by 4:00: Friday Session Plans are due
o Thursday by 4:00: Monday session plans dues
- Lesson plan submission will begin on Thursday of Week 2 for the following Monday session
Conduct Therapy Sessions
- All therapy sessions will be individual student sessions.
- Therapy sessions will primarily be provided in-person according to a pull-out service delivery model. Pull out sessions may be conducted in the therapy room, throughout the school building, and out in the community, when appropriate.
- The graduate clinician will be required to follow Covid-19 safety protocols including, but not limited to, wiping down toys/materials/work surfaces and wearing gloves, when necessary
- Push-in sessions are currently suspended due to Covid-19 safety protocols. If protocols change during the internship time frame, the graduate student may be responsible for providing push-in speech therapy sessions in the classroom. The supervising clinician will support the graduate clinician with any such change to ensure the graduate clinician is comfortable with any adjustments in the service delivery model protocol.
- The graduate student may be required to conduct therapy sessions via a remote synchronous videoconferencing platform if the student and or clinician, themself, is advised to work from home by a medical professional due to Covid-19 protocols
- Accompanied by supervisor, graduate student will retrieve student from classroom and transition to therapy office, unless student transitions independently
- Supervisor will observe all sessions and will intervene to provide support, guidance or constructive feedback on an as needed basis
- Graduate student is responsible for attending all sessions from start of program
o Week 1: Observe supervising clinician conduct all intervention sessions
o Week 2: Observe supervising clinician conduct all intervention sessions; graduate student clinician can begin to treat 1-2 students at the end of the week depending on level of comfort
o Week 3: Treat two students on supervising clinician’s caseload, observe supervising clinician conduct remaining intervention sessions
o Week 4: Treat five students on supervising clinician’s caseload, observe supervising clinician conduct remaining intervention sessions
o Week 5: Treat eight students on supervising clinician’s caseload, observe
supervising clinician conduct remaining intervention sessions
o Week 6: Treat all students on supervising clinician’s caseload, supervising clinician will observe all intervention sessions
- Graduate student clinician is to be prepared for all sessions with materials and plans
- Therapy sessions must begin on-time and are to be conducted for full 30-minutes Complete Session Notes
- Session notes are to be completed with MSA Session Note template and shared with your supervisor
- Session notes are to include all elements of a SOAP note (Areas of Therapeutic Focus, Subjective, Progress Indicated, Goals)
- Notes are to be submitted by 4:00 PM each day
- Supervisor will provide feedback for changes if needed
- Once any edits are made, graduate clinician must input notes into Salesforce and supervising clinician will sign off Meetings
- Graduate student clinician is expected to attend all scheduled meetings with
interdisciplinary team
- Enrichment meetings will be held in the afternoons from 2:50-3:15 (Supervisor will share schedule with graduate student clinician)
- Graduate student clinician will attend enrichment meetings (on Zoom for the time being) and will sign on via Supervisor’s Zoom ID.
QUARTERLY REPORTS
- Progress reports are written quarterly (2 narratives and 2 checklists)
- Graduate student clinician will be responsible for reviewing prior quarterly reports, for each student on caseload
- Graduate student clinician will be responsible for reviewing and discussing January quarterly reports written by supervising clinician, for each student on their caseload
- Graduate student clinician will be responsible for writing March quarterly reports for their respective caseload of students, if applicable
- Graduate student clinician may be responsible for writing sections of June quarterly reports for their respective caseload of students, if applicable
DRESS CODE AND PROFESSIONALISM
- Arrive to work on time and be ready to begin working at 8:15 each day
- Be timely and prompt to all sessions and supervision meetings
- Dress respectfully:
- Do not wear clothes generally considered shocking or immodest by others
- Do not wear ripped jeans
- No undergarments may show. Sleeves must stay put and cover undergarment
straps.
- Sleeves must be at least three fingers wide at the top of the shoulder. Midriffs
should be fully and completely covered
- Shirts, tanks, and camisoles may not be so thin or sheer as to resemble pajamas or show underwear.
- No cleavage may be showing at all—consider wearing a camisole underneath
tops
- Be mindful of language used with students and parents.
- Never speak about a student to another person in front of the student, as if the student was not there.
- Graduate student clinicians are not permitted to communicate directly with
parents, unless advised to do so by the supervising clinician and under the direct supervision of the supervising clinician.
