Health Policy Intern

3.8

The newly minted AAMC Center for Health Justice works to 1) build the case for health justice through research, analysis, and resource development that will help make the case for practice transformation and policy changes —within health care and beyond— needed to advance health equity, and 2) develop innovative partnerships with community and other multisector stakeholders grounded in shared leadership in order to have more effective and sustainable interventions that promote health equity.

Development Opportunities:

The intern will have the opportunity to gain exposure to many kinds of research methodologies and to learn about health equity research and policy. He or she will also be given the opportunity to strengthen research skills both quantitative (presenting analytic results) and qualitative (coding text-based data). In addition, he/she will attend, when appropriate, external meetings to gain insight into how different processes impact the health policy landscape. There will also be opportunities for the intern to inform related AAMC legislative activity, as well as strengthen formal presentation skills and disseminate research findings to diverse groups of stakeholders.

Project-Related Responsibilities:

The intern will work with our team to assist with key aspects of planning for a national two-day convening hosted by the AAMC Center for Health Justice, titled the Maternal Health Incubator, which will take place in April/May 2022. Generally, the conference will convene academic medical centers, their community partners, and multisector stakeholders to 1) highlight innovations in maternal health and 2) start developing a multisector agenda for maternal health equity. The intern will participate in regular planning meetings and provide assistance with agenda setting, speaker/partner outreach, and content development for the conference.

The intern will also play an integral part in supporting the AAMC Center for Health Justice’s public polling on maternal health (January/February 2022). Poll results will include data on predetermined topics related to maternal health from a representative sample of birthing persons across the U.S. Potential activities (which can also serve as a final project) include but are not limited to: development of thematic categories for polling questions, qualitative and quantitative analysis and presentation of poll results, and writing reports or summaries (e.g. white papers, policy briefs) related to poll findings.

The intern will be expected to attend monthly calls for the AAMC maternal health workgroup calls, which is comprised of both internal and external maternal/child health experts and stakeholders who provide guidance and support for AAMC’s maternal health portfolio. Representatives hail from non-profit, academic, and federal organizations. There may also be additional opportunities for the intern to assist with the preparation for an inaugural AAMC Maternal Health Equity Call for Research initiative (launching in the summer of 2022), leveraging data made available via the public polling.

Start and end dates:

The start and end dates are flexible but generally, the internship will run between January- May 2022. Please note that this internship can be conducted virtually.
