The Brown University Pre-College Programs enroll over 5,000 high school students (14-18 years old) from all over the world. Students enroll in programs with courses that vary in length offered online (2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks), with hundreds of options to choose from reflecting the breadth of Brown’s undergraduate curriculum. These programs provide an opportunity for inquisitive students to experience college level academics, participate in fun and challenging activities, and learn from and with a diverse group of peers. ABOUT REMOTE ACTIVITIES MANAGER POSITIONS:
A remote Activities Manager with Brown’s Pre-College Programs offers an opportunity for graduate students, and others with an equivalent combination of education and experience, to meet the expectations of a full-time professional role, gain practical experience in student life, develop leadership abilities, and hone supervision skills, in addition to many other transferable skills that prepare staff to excel in any future position in higher education.
Remote Activities Managers serve as a vital member of the Pre-College Student Life team within the Division of Pre-College and Undergraduate Programs (PCUG). PCUG is dedicated to ensuring a supportive, challenging, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for adolescents from all over the world who attend Brown University Pre-College online programs over the course of the summer. Remote Activities Managers contribute to these goals by fostering the growth and development of seasonal staff and Pre-College students. Remote Activities Managers will supervise seasonal staff Student Life Mentors, prepare educational virtual lessons, facilitate webinars around college access and success, support the logistics and operations of all online Student Life programs, and respond to student and family concerns with a high level of customer service.
This position will work remotely and it is an expectation that the person in this position has the ability to call into multiple Zoom video calls weekly. Staff will attend a virtual multi-day training via Zoom to prepare them for their role.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Contribute to Pre-College student development by coordinating and facilitating virtual events/activities:
  • Create, coordinate, and lead virtual webinars, workshops, and social gatherings for Pre-College Students
  • Participate in panel events as both moderator and panelist depending on the content area
  • Oversee the logistics of virtual event creation, registration processes, and related communication with staff, students, and families
  • Offer office-hours to provide guidance and mentorship for Pre-College students
  • Assist Pre-College Student Life staff to create lesson plans and prepare any necessary materials
  • Support student holistic growth and well-being by:
    • Learning about and understand the Pre-College Programs in which the students are enrolled in order to better support their success in and out of the classroom;
    • Promoting a welcoming, safe, and inclusive online environment;
    • Serving as a mentor and resource regarding policies and procedures;
    • Enforcing policies as needed;
    • Referring students to appropriate resources as needed;
    • Report unsafe, inappropriate, and/or concerning behavior of students to the appropriate professional staff member(s)
Support staff development and retention
  • Supervise seasonal staff members and effectively build a sense of team and collaboration within the staff, duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Lead weekly staff meetings for seasonal staff
    • Build and maintain relationships
    • Delegate tasks and share information with appropriate staff
    • Hold one-on-one meetings with assigned seasonal staff to provide guidance in their roles, developmental support, and accountability conversations
    • Address staff conduct behaviors
    • Refer staff to appropriate resources as needed
    • Enforce Pre-College Program policies and procedures for seasonal staff
    • Report unsafe, inappropriate, and/or concerning behavior by seasonal staff to appropriate professional staff members
    • Approve time off and tracking hours
    • Write evaluations
    • Oversee staff appreciation efforts, including managing related budget
  • Training
  • Attend and participate in training sessions
  • No outside commitments are allowed during the training period which runs from June 1 to June 6, 2022
  • Staff training will be approximately 40 hours
  • Support seasonal staff training by
    • Facilitate training sessions in collaboration with professional staff
    • Attending all relevant sessions
    • Ensuring attendance of assigned staff
    • Holding staff accountable for engaging in sessions and completing all relevant quizzes and other assessment tools
    • Supporting professional staff with communication to seasonal staff, logistical needs, and other needs as they arise
Support Pre-College Student Life operations
  • Respond to inquiries quickly, thoroughly, and productively to ensure students continue to have confidence and comfort in the program’s ability to support them toward successful completion. Refer parent/guardian/family inquiries to the appropriate supervisor in a timely manner
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Complete administrative paperwork in a timely and efficient manner, and in accordance with all relevant procedures and deadlines
  • Meet with supervisor for weekly one-on-one
  • Assist with departmental benchmarking and assessment processes and participate in a debrief meetings/evaluations at the conclusion of your employment
  • On weeks when Pre-College students are not in session, staff will be required to work completing various tasks for the summer programs
  • Complete other duties as assigned, as the summer is a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
  • Work evenings and weekends, schedule typically provided in advance

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Employment dates are June 1 – August 10, 2022
  • Be enrolled in a graduate program or have completed a graduate degree within the last six months, or have an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Have no other obligations for the duration of the employment dates including, but not limited to employment, internship, or academic course (unless directly connected to this position and you have received prior approval from the Assistant Director, Pre-College Student Life)
  • Evening and weekend work expected

  • Complete a successful criminal background check by the University. Finalists receive a conditional offer of employment pending this outcome
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
  • $7,000.00 taxable stipend, paid bi-weekly and will be prorated in the instance of early departure
  • Permitted four vacation days with prior approval by supervisor
TERMS:
The Remote Activities Manager positions with Brown University are at-will positions, which means that either the University or the Remote Activities Manager may discontinue employment at any time and for any reason, prior to the conclusion of the Program. In the event of termination, the Remote Activities Manager will receive a prorated share of the agreed upon stipend amount offered in exchange for the services provided.
