Overview:
AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.
The AARP Virginia State Office is looking for a strong undergraduate or graduate intern to join its communications team for the calendar year 2022. The intern will be directed by the state Communications Manager and will provide communications support for state and federal advocacy campaigns, voter education, outreach programs, and other local initiatives. As a Communications Intern at AARP, you will have the opportunity to join our team of professionals working on major campaigns, to engage our 38 million members (1 million in Virginia) and potential members. You will be assigned critical tasks and get to see your work in action.
Candidates must be self-motivated, organized, collaborative, learn quickly, and take directions well. Must be able to work independently and make decisions regarding editorial content under the supervision of the state Communications Manager. The primary nature of interaction is coordinative with AARP Virginia state office staff and volunteers. The intern is a vital supportive role to AARP Virginia’s advocacy communications projects. In addition, the intern will work directly with the state Communications Manager to complete tasks related to dashboard goals.
This is an excellent opportunity for the ideal intern to develop solid work experience with the largest social welfare organization in the country while contributing to projects that affect our members who are age 50 and older.
Responsibilities:
The intern should be available for at least 20 hours per week Monday through Friday, January through December 2022. The intern must be capable of working independently in a remote setting while AARP is teleworking and available to work at the AARP Richmond office for at least 4 hours at a time when the office reopens. The intern may be asked to participate in local events throughout Virginia when they resume. The office is conveniently located in downtown Richmond.
