College Intern - Environmental Laboratory & Field Services

Phoenix-based SRP, the nation's third-largest public power and water utility, is currently recruiting for a Chemistry (or related scientific discipline) major to fill a College Intern position in our Environmental Laboratory & Field Services department in Tempe, AZ.

Job Responsibilities

  • Position includes both laboratory and field responsibilities
  • Receiving and logging environmental samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Sample preparation (e.g., metals digestions) and basic wet chemistry and microbiology analyses (e.g., pH, alkalinity, conductivity, total dissolved/suspended solids, total coliform, etc.)
  • Analysis of environmental samples using laboratory instrumentation under the supervision of a chemist. Laboratory instrumentation may include: Mercury Analyzer, Inductively Coupled Plasma, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Ion Chromatograph, etc.
  • Field duties, including environmental sample collection (e.g., water, waste, soils, etc.)
  • Calibration, maintenance, and operation of field analytical instruments
  • Operation of a company vehicle for field duties
  • Analytical data processing, entry, and review
  • Other laboratory and field duties as needed

Education

College level coursework (100+) from an accredited institution will be evaluated on an individual basis according to the skill/level to determine if applicable to the position by management.

Additional Information

  • Hours: 15-25 hours per week. Hours are flexible but must fall between 7 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday, with a shift duration of at least 4 hours
  • Must be enrolled in a minimum of six college credit hours. Prefer a student majoring in Chemistry or close equivalent.
  • Pay rate is $17 per hour for an undergraduate and $19.00 per hour for a graduate intern. Candidates with a GPA of a "C" or better will be considered.
  • We are taking steps to protect the health and well-being of all team members, and by limiting the number of employees on-site, to reduce the risk of the coronavirus (COVID-19). Employees with jobs that can be performed remotely and who have sufficient technical capability to do so are being directed to work from home. This is a temporary response until all employees have been directed to return to work on-site, (January 18, 2022). Although you are asked to temporarily telework, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
