Research Scientist Intern

Job Description

The Parallel Computing Lab (PCL) at Intel Labs is seeking graduate interns for machine programming research. PCL investigates emerging compute- and data-intensive applications in artificial intelligence, traditional high-performance computing, big data computing, computational biology, physical simulation, and large-scale optimization problems. Machine Programming Research within PCL makes it easy to build performant and maintainable software systems by leveraging techniques from various fields such as machine learning, data systems, formal methods, and programming languages.

We collaborate with leading academic and industry co-travelers to understand the hardware and software architectural implications for Intel's parallel processing platforms. The intern will be expected to focus on a specific project of mutual interest, focusing on a target research problem in this space.

In this position you will be responsible for implementing, researching, and prototyping new algorithms, architectures, and approaches. You will develop state-of-the-art software and hardware systems to integrate these systems in the open-source ecosystem and Intel's future product lines. You will identify and research promising technologies typically 3-5 years before product development. You may also participate in the development of an intellectual property, but it is not required.

The candidate should exhibit the following behavioral traits:

  • Motivated individual who can take initiative and perform research independently
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills

This is an internship position and compensation will be given accordingly.

The work can be remote or in-person, depending on Intel's policy when the internship starts.

Preferred qualifications are in addition to the requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates. Experience listed below would be obtained through a combination of your schoolwork and/or classes and/or research and/or relevant previous job and/or internship experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

The candidate must be pursuing a Master's Degree or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other related areas with a demonstrable understanding of machine learning, data systems, and programming languages.

1+ year experience in below areas:

  • Software development skills using Python and C/C++
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFloat and PyTorch

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in parallel workloads (e.g., machine learning, scientific computing, data analytics).
  • Tier-1 research publications in areas of machine learning, data systems, and/or programming languages.
  • Demonstrable research output, including technical reports, master thesis, and publications.
