Job duties: The Kansas Court of Appeals is offering a summer internship program for interested law students. Employment involves highly responsible confidential legal work for the Kansas Court of Appeals. Interns will shadow judges and research attorneys to learn the duties and day-to-day aspects of working for the court and will have a chance to observe the process of an appeal from the court's perspective from start to finish. The program's emphasis will be writing, with research attorneys and judges providing feedback.
This is entry level research work requiring an understanding of legal research principals. Interns will work under the supervision of research attorneys and will have opportunities to visit with and get feedback from Court of Appeals Judges.
Students will have an opportunity to:
- Review briefs and records
- Conduct legal research
- Draft memos and proposed opinions
- Observe oral arguments
Required Education and Experience: Currently enrolled law school students who have successfully completed their or 2L year of law school. Preference will be given to applicants with a law school GPA in the top one-third of the applicant's class.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong legal writing and research skills
- Proficient in use of office technology
- Ability to maintain a harmonious work environment through professional, courteous and professional behavior
Location, Hours, and Pay: Hours are part-time and flexible, and work may be remote or in-person at the Kanas Judicial Center, as determined by the supervising attorney. Students who want course credit through their school's judicial internship program may do so by making the necessary arrangements with their school.
A paid internship option is available for Spring 2022, pay grade 29, $20.47 hourly. Students who wish to get course credit must check with their school's judicial internship program whether that is allowed.
