We are the incubation arm of Walmart. Store Nº8 was formed in 2017 as part of Walmart’s larger innovation mission to shape the future of commerce. We pursue big ideas and take risks by stepping outside of Walmart’s core business to focus on leapfrog capabilities across conversational commerce, mixed reality, in-store digitization, and more. Our ultimate goal: fuel Walmart’s core business, create new operational efficiencies, and unlock amazing experiences for our customers in the long-term.

We are offering two MBA internship opportunities in our team:

MBA Intern Incubation MBA Intern Portfolio Management

MBA Intern Incubation | ABOUT THE ROLE:

As an MBA Intern within Store Nº8’s Venture Design team, you will have the exciting opportunity to support the creation of newly incubated ventures within the Store No8 portfolio. You will gain exposure to early-stage startup building across multiple domains. You will collaborate closely with Walmart teams across functional domains to drive the standup of new portfolio companies. Additionally, you will develop tools and methodology to support future venture design initiatives.

What you will do:

  • Support the venture design for an approved concept that is being turned into a new portfolio company.
  • Design and execute experiments to turn an approved concept into validated problem solution fit.
  • Business design, including first drafts of business and financial planning, go to market strategies and organizational design
  • Build a detailed financial plan for the new venture
  • Turn the ecosystem analysis for this domain into specific partnerships that will accelerate the success of the venture.
  • Collaborate with Walmart teams across the organization to help the venture navigate organizational complexity across functional domains (e.g. Legal, Risk, Compliance, Finance, Talent)
  • Develop tools and methodologies that support the success, speed and efficiency of future venture design projects.

MBA Intern Portfolio Management | ABOUT THE ROLE:

As an MBA Intern within Store Nº8’s Strategy & Operations team, you will have the exciting opportunity to strategically advice and manage the portfolio of our internally grown startups. You will get exposure to the decision making about the way forward for our portfolio companies and will collaborate closely with the teams in their recurring progress updates. In this role you will acquire a unique set of skills in innovation practices, startup stages and investor know how. At the same time you will have the chance to infuse your ideas and strategic recommendations, and mentor our teams of diverse technological backgrounds in the retail and healthcare industries.

What you will do:

  • Assist Store Nº8’s leadership in executing the bi-annual progress review of the portfolio companies
  • Perform primary and secondary market research to determine competitive environment of current portfolio
  • Analyze maturity stage and expected progress against startup stages to recommend corrective actions if necessary
  • Synthesize research and create strategic recommendations on potential pivots or accelerations for each portfolio company
  • Build basic financial ROI models and capture validated assumptions
  • Support documentation of Store Nº8’s value creation through quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Review funding requests against milestone strategies and support decision making in overall portfolio funding
  • Assist in creating Board presentations and updates based on collaboration with the portfolio companies

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • MBA candidate at an internationally recognized, top-tier program
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in project mgt, product mgt or strategy roles; past experience in innovation, strategy consulting, VC, or entrepreneurship a strong plus
  • Working knowledge of financial modeling in Excel and advanced PowerPoint skills to develop and communicate business plans
  • Strategic, critical thinking with strong problem-solving skills and business acumen
  • Strong communication skills; experience presenting to and influencing senior leadership
  • Ability to self-manage and ‘manage up’, with an understanding of when to operate independently and when to rely on leadership for support and oversight
  • Passion and understanding for entrepreneurship and innovation, and a desire to help startups succeed
  • Deeply curious and excited to learn something new; thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment and excel under pressure
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with excellent, often scrappy, problem-solving skills
  • Team player with integrity, dependability and empathy
  • Authorization to work in US without restriction
