Job Description

This role is focused on the operational research, specifically discrete event simulation application in healthcare, but will interact and coordinate with other departmental specialists. As a Process Improvement Engineer Intern you will be supporting administrative tasks, projects, and research focused on the health system’s operations. In addition you will collect, prepare, and analyze necessary data for review and/or presentation. You will get to see and experience firsthand what methodologies are used to help improve processes that impact the care we provide for our patients.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Identifies current process gaps through the use of observations, data collection, data analysis, process mapping and flow under guidance and mentorship provided by Clinical Transformation
  • Applies principles, techniques and procedures to design and perform a discrete event simulation study, closely working with their assigned Clinical Transformation Mentor
  • Supports the summary and delivery of findings, recommendations, and action plans, closely working with their assigned Clinical Transformation Mentor
  • Supports development of metrics, dashboards, reports, and identifies areas of improvement using various analytical tools and techniques
  • Understands professional concepts/ standards of own work area, regulations, strategies and operating standards while working virtually

• Participates in Clinical Transformation department meetings • Attends recommended free virtual classes offered at the Center for Learning and Innovation at Northwell Health

  • Performs related duties, as required.

The Clinical Transformation department is responsible for driving and supporting large scale innovation and operational excellence across Northwell Health. The team consists of skill sets in operational research, improvement science, project management, and change management. Through a variety of advanced analytical methods such as Predictive Analytics, Six Sigma, Lean, PDSA and Discrete Event Simulation, Clinical Transformation provides a framework to optimize healthcare delivery system. The scale of challenge, resources, time frame and goals drive the choice of scientific methodology in our department.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Currently a rising senior undergraduate, Bachelor’s recipient or Graduate Degree candidate in a related field, required.
  • Degree concentration in Industrial Engineering, Systems Science, MBA in healthcare, or Organizational Management, preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and written, required.
  • Knowledge of statistics, time studies, process balancing, continues improvement techniques, work flow measurement, statistical process control, and operational research methods.
  • Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, required.
  • Proficient computer skills Simio software, required.
  • Proficient computer skills in Minitab or R for statistical analysis.
