Marine Mammal Research Intern

The Marine Mammal Research Intern will assist with marine mammal research at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) to support CMA staff and facilitate data collection and coordinate this research with PIs at New College of Florida and Carnegie Mellon University. Duties include communicating with staff and PIs, coordinating with on-site and off-site researchers, managing research equipment, setting up and taking down research session equipment, maintaining research equipment, managing data collection, organizing data, building research structures, managing data bases, supporting CMA staff as needed, analyzing data, doing literature searches, documenting research progress, documenting on-going methods, organizing all aspects of the on-going research, regularly communicating with PIs and CMA, supporting public education, and other duties as needed to support the research.

This is a temporary position, 16 weeks in length, working 40 hours per week.

Position Location: Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Clearwater, FL, and New College of Florida, Sarasota, FL

The ideal candidate should be late in their college career or newly graduated within the last year. They should have a long-term and documented interest in research with non-human animals. Candidates must have strong communication skills, open-minded perspectives, an even temperament, very strong organizational skills, research experience ideally with their own projects including: data collection and management, data analysis, skill with Excel and other common computer programs, literature searches, writing research reports, and documenting on-going research projects. Candidates should also be good at learning new skills quickly, including new computer programs.

The selected candidate must work well independently and with others, be excited about expanding their skills and participating in on-going research, and be open and responsive to feedback.

Degrees in psychology and/or biology preferred. SCUBA certification preferred. Experience with Avisoft SASLab acoustical analysis software preferred. Experience working in aquarium settings preferred.
