Some of what you'll be doing:

As a Junior Mechanical Engineer in our Aviation Facilities & Infrastructure department, you will provide mechanical system engineering (calculations, drawings, etc.), integration, testing, commissioning, and activation of complex mechanical systems the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

  • You will perform calculations (heating/cooling, flow, pressure etc.), analysis and field investigations to enhance, upgrade or replace elements of mechanical systems within the terminal and other Aviation Division owned buildings.
  • You will assist with existing building infrastructure system condition assessments as part of the asset management system for Aviation Division. Investigate temperature and indoor air quality fluctuations and provide reports and recommendations to senior staff and maintenance for implementation.
  • You will assist with the creation and maintenance of plans for expanding and renewing entire and partial mechanical systems including the development of Auto Cad record drawings.
  • You will assist with the operation and controls of mechanical systems through the use of the central control system. Assist in evaluating and recommending operation of central plant equipment such as large chillers, boilers and pumping systems particularly with respect to energy conservation implementation.
  • You will calculate, envision, and scope mechanical system space and layout requirements for tenants within facilities and concessionaires.
  • You will develop maintenance costs and manpower requirements and integrate into mechanical systems master plans and preventative maintenance work plans.
  • You will work with project managers to identify, conceptualize, and integrate project and program requirements and mechanical system support strategies.
  • You will propose, analyze, and prepare reports of energy conservation initiatives as they relate to the mechanical systems.
  • You will perform research relating to the Mechanical Systems Standards for all mechanical systems and maintain and update the standards by evaluating new or improved equipment and accessories used in mechanical systems.
  • You will ensure compliance with the standards through meetings, design reviews, and communication with project management group and design consultants working on construction projects.
  • You will assist in reviews all mechanical systems of engineering drawings for construction projects at various stages of design development.
  • You will support the Airport Building (Permitting) and Fire departments with code interpretation, plans review and code enforcement as they pertain to mechanical systems to ensure the most appropriate systems are designed for each type of facility.
Who you are:
  • Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited school.
  • Desired – We hope you have Six (6) months of experience design consulting with construction experience and Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Mechanical Knowledge – You have basic knowledge of engineering principles, control systems and theory for equipment, sequencing, and large network control communication computer systems.
  • Communication – You have excellent verbal, written and active listening skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Critical Thinking – You have the ability to utilize critical thinking and judgment in defining, analyzing and resolving problems.
  • Collaborative – You are able to work as part of a team and partner with staff to achieve results.
What else you need to know:
  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally to project sites.
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work during emergencies.
  • Work Environment – You will primarily work in an office environment.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement – Effective, November 15, 2021, the Port of Seattle will require that at the time of hire, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be able to provide proof of their full COVID-19 vaccination status, as part of the hiring process.   • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
