The bioinformatics group within the Global Translational Science team at Varian is seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatics Research Scientist Intern this summer. The group is currently discovering biomarkers for patient stratification, developing model to predict radiotherapy outcome and optimizing the treatment planning. The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to high profile project within the company. The intern will be mentored by the lead Scientist for the bioinformatics group and function as a research Scientist/Associate and lead their own project for the summer. There will be an opportunity for publication/patent filing.

Role Responsibilities

  • Fully remote internship
  • Analyze high-throughput RNA/DNA sequencing data and work with our team of scientists and bioinformaticians to answer specific biological questions.
  • Write clean, reusable, and composable code to develop tools and automated bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze and communicate results and recommend follow-up actions in multiple settings (including: 1:1, seminars, group, and project meetings)
  • Actively learn from the recent bioinformatic publications and apply the methods to our questions

Qualifications

  • Applicants should be enrolled in university pursuing a degree or graduated within 12 months with a degree (BS, BA, MS, PhD) in bioinformatics, biostatistics, statistics, computer science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of genomics and relevant NGS analyses (mapping, variant calling, etc.).
  • Solid programming skills in Python and related packages (pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, matplotlib).
  • Strong experience analyzing data from a range of bioinformatic tools such as samtools, fastqc, and kallisto
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and data presentation skills
  • Experience with public domain data sources, e.g. TCGA, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with a scientific programming environment, such as R, is preferred.
  • Experience using Linux command-line tools is a plus
  • Knowledge in cancer biology or immunology is a plus
  • Experience computational cancer genomics, medical image processing is a plus.
  • Team player, self-motivated and detail-oriented.
