AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.


AARP Montana is seeking a social media intern for 2022. This position will maintain and grow the social media accounts for the AARP Montana state office. Additionally, opportunities for some outreach, event planning, and advocacy-related activities will be part of the position. Are you a creative social media whiz looking for a paid internship? We’re looking for you! The position will begin in May/June and run to the end of the year. The position is based in Helena at the AARP Montana Office and is now entirely remote. We may return to the office at some point in 2022.

You’ll also assist in researching, writing, and publishing social media and blog posts. You will also create engaging motion graphics and static graphics. Through it all, you’ll be connecting with members, volunteers, and staff so that you can understand and help share the full story of our work in the state. Additionally, you can help shape this internship based on your skills and interests. Do you love helping teach people how to use social media? Maybe you’d like to help develop and deliver social media training to volunteers and staff. Do you love creating custom animation and motion graphics? Create away!

Responsibilities:

The intern will support the AARP Montana office in the following activities:

  • Creating fun, exciting, and engaging short videos and motion graphics for use on social media
  • Assist in developing and sustaining a strong social media presence focused on relevant and timely messaging and information for members in Montana
  • Develop and maintain a positive, two-way, interactive dialog on various social media channels to drive engagements
  • Creating and updating posts, profiles, and pages for Facebook and Twitter through the Sprinklr marketing platform – posts to be scheduled to run several times per week
  • Tracking the growth and impact of social media channels and suggesting action steps to increase influence, relevence, and growth
  • Potentially attending selected events and taking photos/videos, and “live-tweeting” from those events
  • Assisting with the development and execution of paid social media advertising campaigns designed to increase impact and relevence across social media channels
  • Creating content and posting to the Montana blog pages using an interface platform similar to WordPress
  • Creating PowerPoint presentations on special projects
  • Responsible for serving as an “AARP brand steward” by protecting the AARP brand and its reputation through the responsible use of social media, learning AARP’s mission, culture, history, and projects with special emphasis on understanding AARP membership and the 50+
  • Some outreach, event planning, and advocacy-related opportunities will be part of the position
Qualifications:

Prospective intern must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post doctorate students.

AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.

  • Must love social media and be proficient in Facebook and Twitter
  • The use of other social media/blog interface tools is a huge plus
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office programs
  • Proficient in using various technological tools, including cameras, microphones, lights, tablets, smartphones, and editing software a plus
  • Excellent research and writing skills, with keen proofreading skills
  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Available to work 15-25 hours per week remotely
  • The internship will require someone dependable, professional, efficient, able to juggle multiple projects and prioritize tasks, and handle working on deadlines, sometimes on short notice
