Job Description

Takeda Pharmaceutical

About the role:

Takeda's summer internship program blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience. The summer internship program is 12 weeks in length and offers a unique perspective into a world-class pharmaceutical company. Our internship program also provides you the opportunity to network with people at Takeda through various planned events and activities.

Project Outline:

Join us for an exciting summer internship within the Downstream Development area of Biologics Process Development! The intern will be heavily involved in several exploratory projects. The first project broadly aims to characterize the biophysical properties of several therapeutic proteins currently under development at Takeda. These studies aspire to interrogate interactions between therapeutic proteins and process-related impurities, ultimately to understand how interactions between these species directly translate to challenges in bioseparations. In the second project, the intern will support studies aimed at accelerating our in silico/mechanistic modeling capabilities for column chromatography development.

Under the supervision of a process engineer, the intern will contribute to study design and execute experiments in the laboratory. Techniques will include chromatography, biophysical analysis (e.g., dynamic light scattering, thermal degradation, etc.), and bioconjugation, among others. The intern will have opportunities to present research findings (through both written updates and oral presentations) to other stakeholders within Biologics Process Development.

The ideal candidate will be a junior or senior undergraduate, a recent graduate from an undergraduate institution, or a candidate in a master’s program. The candidate should major in chemical engineering, biochemical/biological engineering, chemistry, biology, or a similar field. At least one year of hands-on, lab-based research experience is highly preferred. The candidate should be familiar with basic protein chemistry and bioseparations (e.g., chromatography, filtration), among other laboratory skills. Knowledge of biophysical characterization techniques (such as those for interrogating protein-protein interactions), bioconjugation, and AKTA FPLC purification systems is a plus.

The candidate should be a self-starter and be comfortable working in the laboratory, with some direction of an engineer in Biologics Process Development. Strong communication, organizational, and record-keeping skills are highly desired.

How you will contribute:

  • Deadline-driven with a high level of organizational and planning skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills; he or she also has the ability to work well in teams, effectively manage projects, and present ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Global mindset to grow in a diverse work environment
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

What you bring to Takeda:

  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis
  • Must be available full time (40 hours/week) a minimum of 12 weeks during the Summer months
  • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
  • Undergraduate, Graduate, PhD, MD student with at least one year of university studies before internship.
  • Return to university for at least one semester post-internship
  • Takeda does not provide student housing or housing stipends

Salary & Location:

  • Intern pay rate ranges are from $18/hour to $45/hour, depending on students level in their undergraduate or graduate program and level professional experience.
  • Location is COVID-19 dependent, remote applicants may apply.
