Job Description
The Instructional Designer will be responsible for designing a program(s) that leads to the maximization of student learning and career outcomes in one or mult iple domains. They will analyze data, define and run research, and iterate on content and curricula for skills training across Thinkful’s portfolio of courses to achieve these outcomes. The content created will address the core needs of learners who wish to upskill or move into new career paths.
The Senior Instructional designer must be knowledgeable of best practices in adult learning and brings experience developing content and assessments to meet the needs of learn ers and partners . They will stay up to date on industry-recognized credentials and skills to prepare students to test for certifications or job outcomes. They will then use this set of findings to inspire informed development of our programs for a designated area , and measure the efficacy of the content they design at delivering improved student outcomes.
Responsibilities
You’ll formulate a data-driven strategy for maintaining and improving instructional materials for 1-2 programs , drawing on existing metrics like pacing, skills attainment, and mastery
Partner with our Head of Instructional Design to formulate a strategy for improving student outcomes in assigned programs.
Partner with Producers, Editors, and Instructional Designers to ensure our content roadmap is aligned to the largest opportunities for improvement for our students within a domain
Identify high-leverage individual program optimizations that ensure every program we teach hits our goals for student outcomes.
Consistently update this strategy and roadmap across domains as we learn about what helps students and partners succeed.
Act as the team expert on pedagogy, instructional strategies, and assessment design.
You'll conduct surveys, tests, and competitive analyses to ensure our learning objectives are teaching towards the highest-demand job skills in each industry we teach.
Analyze learner data to identify and seize opportunities for improvement across our entire portfolio and develop learner personas that inform content development.
Test new content with users as its being developed to ensure clarity and student engagement is a core tenant of each piece of content we develop.
Evaluate the efficacy of learning outcomes and curriculum for both individual students and across the catalog
You'll set program design and create material to help students achieve objectives at high rates
That includes setting learning objectives, designing and writing lessons to achieve those learning objectives, designing formative and summative assessments to measure student mastery, and monitoring and addressing feedback from students and educators.
You'll also recruit, manage and review the work of subject matter expert authors, and you'll author material yourself when appropriate.
Create and update our skills taxonomies for each industry to ensure the content we teach is tightly aligned to these skills and delivers a high hired rate for students.
Solve for a diverse group of student personas. Our students have varied education, skills, work backgrounds, and demands on their time: we must build solutions that solve for each group in equitable and personalized ways.
Ensure our content delivery is viable and feasible: recommend and develop content solutions for student problems that can be supported by our Operations teams at scale, and delivered within budget by our Subject Matter Experts, Instructional Designers, and Editorial teams.
Mentor and inspire junior instructional designers and subject matter experts , set the standard for excellence within the department, and consistently deliver high-quality work products.
Recommend, evangelize, and communicate instructional strategy, encouraging cross-functional partners to act in ways that put our students first.
Represent Chegg excellently to students, staff, partners, and peers.
Perform other duties and ad hoc requests as needed by management.
Requirements
3-5 Years working in a Curriculum Development, Learning Design , Learning Engineering, or Instructional Design role.
2+ years designing learning experiences for an online education platform
Excellent writing and editing skills
Experience managing others, formally or informally, to deliver on your vision
Strong understanding and application of best practices in user research, competitive analysis, adult learning theory, and skill development.
Experience running user interviews, surveys, and developing personas based on findings
Experienced in analyzing data, developing and testing hypotheses, and using findings to develop content solutions.
Experience using research and survey tools like Usertesting.com, Typeform , Buring Glass, and consuming market and educational research.
Ability to contextualize skills and tools taught in the program to specific job functions.
Ability to use backward design to create and iterate on content as needed.
Self-motivated, organized, reliable, flexible, deadline-oriented, have keen attention to detail and are able to complete multiple tasks in a timely fashion.
Comfortable with remote work. You enjoy collaborating and partnering with people in a remote environment and have excellent project management skills and follow through.
