Development and Alumni Relations Summer Intern
JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
As an Intern in Penn State’s Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR), you can play an integral role in one of the most respected and successful fundraising operations in the country. Penn State is one of only a dozen public institutions nationwide to complete a $2 billion fundraising campaign, and our alumni association is the largest dues-paying organization of its kind in the world. This success depends not only on our strong institutional culture of philanthropy but also upon the nearly 600 DDAR staff members whose professionalism and expertise set the standard in the field.
The DDAR internship is a 40 hours-a-week, paid position, a full-time commitment. With Penn State in the process of an ambitious capital campaign, interns can expect meaningful projects within a development unit, donor and senior leadership interaction, emphasis on personal and career skill development. This is an ideal experience for those seeking exposure to a career in philanthropy. Prior experience with philanthropy is not required, but candidates should possess exceptional interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and a desire to learn and contribute to Penn State’s mission. Candidates should possess the skills required to interact and build relationships with the diverse internal and external stakeholders the comprise the Penn State community.
Applications will be accepted until January 2, 2022. If selected to move on, first-round interviews will be held in late January 2022 by video chat. Second-round interviews will be held in the month of February. All applicants will be notified of final decisions by March 4, 2022. The eleven-week program will begin on May 16, 2022 and conclude on July 29, 2022. In the event that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic prevents the internship from being conducted in-person, the program may be shortened and/or moved to a remote format, likely for a duration of 3-4 weeks.
After navigating to the job posting by searching on psu.jobs, you will be prompted to complete the application and submit your resume and a cover letter.
Preference will be given to Penn State juniors, seniors and graduate students. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Cover letters should address your commitment to service, interest in philanthropy, and how the internship would be beneficial to your career aspirations. Relevant questions to consider in crafting the cover letter may include: What compelled you to apply for this internship? Describe your past volunteer service and how it’s influenced your personal values and professional ambitions. What do you hope to gain from the internship program? What strengths can you offer to Penn State’s Office of University Development? Do not feel compelled to answer every question; address what will best help the selection committee learn what’s most relevant about your interest in the program and what you think you can bring to it.
