FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Health Care Technician is an integral part of the care team in providing care to the veterans. The HCT is responsible for the delivery of patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Physician.

  • Practices within the scope and certification of a HCT in the nursing unit, clinic, area of assignment and demonstrates consistent practice when temporarily assigned to related nursing units and clinics.
  • Provides care and services to multiple populations served and admitted to the nursing unit, clinic, area of assignment as determined by the patient/resident need for nursing care and services.
  • Provides care of patients/residents and their environment contributing to optimizing patient/resident outcomes as a member of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
  • Provides direct patient/resident care in the provision of the psychological, physical, social and cultural activities of daily living, complete and supportive.
  • Provides for the care of patients/residents with dignity and continuous consideration of the individuals emotional needs.
  • Provides reporting, communication, and documentation in the computerized patient record system with other members of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
  • Maintains certification, BCLS, and currency in required education and training as identified by regulating agencies, Hines VA Hospital, VISN and National Agencies.
  • The HCT demonstrates competency and consistency in the technical use of equipment, application of technical standards and performance of administrative support duties.
  • Demonstrates competency in all HCT skills and but not limited to:
Sterile surgical dressing changes including but not limited to dry dressing over the gastrostomy tube, and any dressing that do not include treatments. Care of patients with PICCs and CVCs, Care of patients with chest tubes, ventilator patients, tracheotomy patients, and assists with leading patient activity groups.
  • The HCT demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with standard operating procedures for the maintenance of reusable medical equipment.
  • The HCT participates in Medical Center activities and demonstrates skills and behaviors that provide and promote positive internal and external customer relationships.
  • The HCT attends unit level and Medical Center meetings and develops as an employee to support committee participation.
  • The HCT maintains patient/resident safety standards assuring patient /resident privacy, patient/resident physical safety, and patient/resident psychological safety.
  • The HCT establishes working relationships with multi-disciplinary and multi-level members of the work team promoting the physical, psychological, and emotional safety of the working environment for all team members.
  • The HCT provides assistance and performs skills such as EKG, vital sign, intake and output, pulse oximetry, glucose finger stick, reports, and records measurements
  • The HCT demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide care and services consistent with Infection Control Standards of Practice providing optimal outcomes for patients, residents, visitors, and employees.
  • The HCT recognizes, responds, and initiates appropriate level response to medical emergency such as cardiac and/or respiratory failure.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday including weekend and rotating holiday rotation. Day Shift (7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Evening/PM Shift (8-hour shift: 3:30 p.m.-12:00 a.m.) and/or (12-hour shift 11:30 a.m.-12:00 a.m.) Night Shift (11:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m.)

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include extensive periods of standing and walking. Patient care activities require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing and similar activities using appropriate body mechanics and other assistive devices for patient and/or equipment movement and transfer. The employee protects self and others from injury.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: applying basic knowledge of basic anatomy/physiology and medical techniques to support direct patient care; effectively communicating and providing support to patients and healthcare professionals; utilizing and maintaining medical equipment and instruments; performing safety/emergency procedures related to patient transport, infection control, environmental safety; observing and reporting changes in patients physical and emotional behavior; performing medical tests and duties including phlebotomy, EKG, and CPR; and entering patient information and vital signs in computerized medical record systems using appropriate terminology.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have; Successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Health Care Technician position.
