Gannett Fleming’s XCEL Internship Program is a formal 10–12-week experience designed to fully immerse you in our culture. Our Geotechnical team is currently looking for a summer intern in Pittsburgh, PA.


As a Geotechnical Engineering Intern, you will assist in the completion of geotechnical projects within a wide variety of business sectors including transportation, navigation, water resources, and site development.


Based on performance, our interns are often offered full-time positions at the culmination of the summer internship program!


Under direction of experienced Geotechnical Engineers, you will:


  • Complete geotechnical analysis and design for various projects and facilities including, but not limited shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, tieback anchors, soil nails, slope stability design and/or stabilization.
  • Prepare written reports and documentation, geotechnical correspondence, design and construction drawings and specifications.
  • Plan, or assist in the planning of subsurface explorations and laboratory testing investigations.
  • Provide construction observation support during the construction phase of various projects.
  • Assist in preparation of geotechnical technical and cost proposals.
  • Serve as lead geotechnical engineer for geotechnical projects or geotechnical components of multidiscipline projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree program: BS or MS in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering with an interest in learning more about careers in the geotechnical industry
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.0 or higher
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Detail oriented team player possessing strong planning and organizational skills
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Physically able to perform work in the field, if applicable

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Status: Rising Junior or above
  • Applicable Geotechnical Engineering coursework or previous Geotechnical Engineering internship
