Gannett Fleming’s XCEL Internship Program is a formal 10–12-week experience designed to fully immerse you in our culture. Emphasis is placed on mentorship and connection to peers across all our business lines while you work alongside leading experts in the engineering industry. We offer biweekly professional development webinars, an Intern Day celebration, and an end-of-summer group presentation and competition. Preference will be given to candidates within driving distance of our offices in order to offer a hybrid work environment, but we will consider fully remote applicants as well. Our Highway Practice is currently looking for summer interns throughout Pennsylvania, with preference to the following locations:

  • Camp Hill, PA
  • Pittsburgh, PA
  • Valley Forge, PA
  • Lehigh Valley, PA

Based on performance, our highway interns are often offered full-time positions at the culmination of the summer internship program!


As a Gannett Fleming intern, you will have the opportunity to work with experienced transportation professionals and aid in providing design services for a wide variety of transportation projects including major roadway and interchange projects, bridge replacement projects, and roadway maintenance projects.


Working closely with supervisors and mentors, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Perform detailed engineering calculations.
  • Design roadway alignments, drainage, erosion control and traffic control.
  • Write technical reports
  • Develop construction plan drawings using Microstation/Openroads design software
  • Develop roadway quantities and construction cost estimates

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree program: BS in Civil Engineering
  • An interest in learning more about careers in the transportation industry
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.0 or higher
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current Status: Rising Junior or above
  • Experience using CADD/Design software (Microstation/Openroads)
  • A focus or coursework related to transportation
  • Prior roadway engineering related internship or similar experience
