DigITs internship 2022 – Library Sciences

4.1
Company Overview:
At Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK), we’re not only changing the way we treat cancer, but also the way the world thinks about it. By working together and pushing forward with innovation and discovery, we’re driving excellence and improving outcomes. We’re treating cancer, one patient at a time. Join us and make a difference every day.

MSK requires all new hires, volunteers, and vendors who come onsite to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. This is based on the COVID-19 vaccines’ high level of protection and our shared responsibility in protecting our patients.

Beginning on February 21, 2022, MSK will require all new hires, volunteers, and vendors who come onsite to provide proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination series + booster (once eligible). Individuals currently eligible for a COVID-19 booster must get their booster, or have an approved exemption as a condition of employment at MSK. Individuals can get their COVID-19 booster 5 months after receiving their second dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or 2 months after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Individuals who are not yet eligible for a booster must meet this criteria within 30 days of becoming eligible.

Program Engagement
: June 6 – August 19 (11 weeks)

Project Focus Areas
: Data Discovery/Research Data Management
  • "Sharing and reusing research data present both opportunities and challenges for the individual researcher, their organizations, and the entire research community, but the promise of data sharing can only be actualized if the right data can be found." https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pcbi.1009768
  • The MSK Data Catalog is a collection of records describing datasets, code, analytical tools, and other research output not captured in traditional bibliographic catalogs.
Components of this internship include:
  • Cataloging/Metadata - Create metadata records which conform to emerging cataloging standards in Research Data Management for datasets deposited by MSK researchers in public repositories.
  • Controlled Vocabularies - Utilize controlled vocabularies as part of the cataloging process, such as NLM medical subject headings (MeSH), the MSK's Oncotree cancer ontology, and NCBI's Taxonomy database for 'subject of study' names. The addition of these controlled vocabularies will enhance findability of records by providing new discovery access points.
  • Discovery Services - Work with the Associate Librarian for Data Management Services to improve our OAI-based harvesting and normalization pipeline which allows the contents of the MSK Data Catalog to be searched in the Library's discovery application, ONESEARCH (Primo).
