Communications and Advocacy Intern (Summer-Fall)
Are you ready to work with one of the nation’s largest non-profits to enrich the lives of older Americans and their families? You will gain valuable experience with public relations, message design, and many written projects such as news releases, website features, legislative testimony, and much more. Challenges for interns include learning to prioritize multiple assignments and juggling many editorial deadlines.
Working closely with the AARP Maine Communications Director, the intern will have the experience of working in a small team environment. In addition, you will receive first-hand knowledge of how AARP develops and conveys its message to almost 38 million members across the nation. Here in Maine, we have over 200,000 AARP members, and our work spans the entire state.
- Apply innovative thinking and problem-solving to challenges
- Review current news, analyze ongoing campaign plans, and work with the AARP Maine team to address priorities
- Create social media graphics and videos
- Support the communications, advocacy, and outreach programs for the Maine State Office
- Compose articles for the state website
- Create and coordinate social media posts, initiate appropriate messaging
- Record earned media hits using internal systems
- Support local virtual events as needed (coffees, on-taps, annual volunteer meetings, etc.)
- Write letters to the editor, legislative testimony, and other articles for print publications
- Create messaging for the Maine State Office social media sites
- Provide general support to volunteers as needed
- Perform other related duties, as assigned
Prospective interns must be currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university; be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students; and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship.
AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program.
Must have excellent communication, organizational, writing, and computer skills; Internet-savvy; and work with volunteers and staff. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team and exercise initiative.
