Summer 2022 Usability Internship

Micro Systems Engineering has internship opportunities open for self-starting, strategic thinking and driven Engineering students. The Usability Team at MSEI is looking to hire a paid intern to support design efforts for an entirely new remote monitoring platform for implantable cardiac monitor (ICM) patients. Such a platform is the gateway for physicians and nurses to remotely manage medical implants, as well as enable therapy guidance for patients. The planned work would focus on the development and testing of screens for the new home monitoring graphical user interface, including, but not limited to, device alert management, remote programming, as well the display of diagnostic information for physicians and nurses conducting remote follow-ups. While the approach would be up to the intern, we would expect that you would start by identifying the important user needs and safety requirements for the defined screens. You could then use that information to create and test a single design iteration (or multiple smaller iterations if time allows). After conducting user research, you would be responsible for putting together a presentation and report detailing the findings and proposed next steps for the designs.

We offer a rewarding paid internship program that will provide valuable experiences to enhance your college career. We provide a wide breadth of opportunities working within our design, development, research and manufacturing engineering organizations. It truly is an individual internship experience, as you may be working with Embedded Software, IC Design/Mixed Signals, Software Development, Hardware Design, and more - it all depends on where your interests are and which project we'd like you to work on to develop your skills.

These hands on opportunities allows students to utilize their skills and training in a practical environment with our implantable pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial mind with a passion for working in a company that is focused on improving patient lives. Our 3-4 month project based intern program for junior, senior or post graduate students will provide you with hands on experience working with medical devices that save and improve the quality of life for patients worldwide.

As an intern, you would have the opportunity to remotely collaborate with different engineering teams in the US and Germany. Potential experience includes:

  • Learning about how the usability process applies for a highly regulated, Class III medical device
  • Planning and executing either an in-person or virtual formative usability study to collect feedback from global user populations (e.g., nurses, physicians)
  • Creating wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes which simplify the presentation of complex diagnostic information
  • Practicing study moderating and note taking with the guidance of usability professionals
  • Tracking of potentially hazardous situations for inclusion in a risk assessment
  • Presenting results to cross-functional teams and documenting findings in a report for regulatory purposes

Preferred qualifications: student currently studying human factors engineering, cognitive psychology, user experience (UX), or another usability-related program, ideally within a year of graduation.
