Senior Mechanical Engineer

Job Summary
Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with expertise relevant to thermal, structural, and mechanical design and testing. In this role, you will contribute to the engineering design and technology development programs for the FHR. The candidate must have experience in solid mechanics, thermal and stress analysis, and computer aided design (CAD). You will support the structural design effort on medium and large projects for a generation IV Nuclear Power Plant, and related scaled prototype and test plants. You will be responsible for meeting the specific project requirements and assuring the technical correctness of design and analysis.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and provide a complete design solution from concept to final design and construction
  • Develop mechanical design information, including functional requirements, for major FHR systems, structures and components, and document in design packages
  • Lead design calculation packages for failure, thermal, and thermo-mechanical stress analysis, utilizing both hands on and finite element analysis
  • Perform mechanical design tradeoff and optimization studies
  • Create and update CAD models for FHR systems, structures and components ensure quality of work and accuracy
  • Create engineering drawings, including dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Perform thermal and stress analysis using analytical and FEA analysis methods
  • Perform post design activities which may include review of subcontractors' submittals, RFI's, and shop drawings. Perform site inspections at construction sites to ensure facility is constructed to contract documents
  • Maintain knowledge of and assess compliance with applicable codes and standards and apply design loading to structures utilizing applicable building codes and design codes
  • Coordinate and communicate design solutions with clients and other engineering disciplines, including presentation, design review meetings, and training
  • Mentor and lead as example to junior engineers and drafter/designers

Qualifications

  • BS or higher degree in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering or similar discipline
  • 10+ years of experience designing for Nuclear, Energy, Chemical, Petrochemical, Defense, or Aerospace application is highly desired
  • 5+ years of experience using analytical methods and FEA simulation to perform thermal and stress analysis
  • Experience designing high temperature with molten salt systems is highly desired but not required
  • Experience with design of nuclear mechanical systems, such as remote maintenance, casks, and shielding is a plus
  • SolidWorks, ANSYS, CAD/CAE or similar software experience is required
  • Experience working in machine shops is desirable
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, particularly Section 3 Division 5 and Section 8 Division 1 and/or 2 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, is a plus
  • Combination of both design and analysis experience is preferred
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others including, but not limited to Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills

Travel

  • Some travel may be required of up to 20%

  • Requires non-standard work-week hours seldom
  • Requires seldom extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines
